Re: Stolen hives in N cal

From the days of yore when outhouses were mainstream. When someone asked, "Where's ______"? The retort was, "She went to the outhouse and the pigs ate her".

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

I'm just guessing, but I think maybe Beeteam6 is thinking about designing hives that would be more beneficial for commercial beeks. If so posting in the Commercial Beekeeping forum would be more...

    Re: Arkansas

Elms are in full bloom Down by the River. They are just starting to swell, "up" here closer to home. Some of the Blackberries have barely discernible leaves showing.

We have had a few night time...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Yes, "may" is the operative word in this case. I had read that foragers only have a three or four day memory. They were confined to their hives for a few days before and after the move. Along with...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

    71 degrees and sunny today.
I got all of my hives moved closer together a couple of weeks ago to facilitate treatments. I moved them during cool rainy weather so they wouldn't be flying much. I...

    Re: Arkansas

Lots of Henbit blooming now. Mostly grey pollen coming in with some yellow sporadically. I don't know where they are getting the yellow, maybe Willow, just guessing.

Our inspector doesn't touch anything or use a hive tool. He wears latex gloves and changes them between inspections. I hope these precautions are adequate.

    Re: Australia’s fires

It seems as though some of our states are finally seeing the wisdom of fire management. The forest service here in Arkansas has been doing prescribed burns for longer than I have lived here.

Re: New England beekeeper's winter journal

My best guess would be 'possums, skunks or 'coons. Are your hives entrances about 18" above ground so that a predator has to expose it's soft underbelly to access the entrance?
    I have six colonies...

    Re: EZ Vap Silicone caps

This is what I bought to clean my vaporizer. I put it in a variable speed drill. I clip the wild ones back as they fray. Works great.

Re: Melt in your mouth Honey caramel!

I didn't know if cold butter would make it cool too quickly. I'll use room temp just in case.

    Thanks again,

Sounds great. One question, should the butter be softened or right out of the fridge.

    Re: Against Smoking Bees

    RW,
On your website, I think you mean pheromones, not hormones.
Also, bees do indeed collect pollen, but in order to make honey they need to also collect nectar.

Many people do not use smoke at...
