  3. Small hive beetle attracted to unused equipment?

Until very recently SHB really hasn't been a problem in the Bay Area. You would see a beetle here or there, but nothing you could call an infestation. This year is different and some folks a few...

    Queen cells not torn down

6 days ago I inspected a hive and found a high mite count, chalkbrood and an overall bad temperament which has been an issue all season. I decided to pinch the queen as I had raised an extra from one...

I have the notches taped up but will open them tomorrow when I inspect. I never saw any bees using them last season.
  12. Re: Cartridge honey super as queen excluder in Demaree swarm control

There are two deeps but after the manipulation there will be one on the bottom with the queen, then the comb honey super, then a super of honey, then another deep with all of the brood up top.
  13. Re: Two swarm clusters, what would you have done?

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! I did add a super, plus some foundationless frames to the mother hive. 63 and sunny here in the East Bay CA tomorrow. I can't wait to check and see what's...
  14. Two swarm clusters, what would you have done?

Last weekend one of my colonies swarmed (March 3rd! This colony was a swarm that moved into a bait hive I set out last year in early March, early swarmers I guess?). They divided into two clusters, a...
  15. Cartridge honey super as queen excluder in Demaree swarm control

I have two colonies that I need to be very aggressive with swarm control because of their location. I was thinking of trying the Demaree method of swarm control but I don't like the idea of the...

    Re: Let's talk Ross Rounds

I picked up a RR kit at a yard sale super cheap. I was thinking of this plan to get the bees to use it: I have one colony that has some desirable qualities so I want to make splits from it. I was...
