Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015-2019 treatment free experience

Thanks Squarepeg. I appreciate the response. Depending on how the season goes, I may try pushing down the queen in a few hives to see how my bees react.

    Square peg -

You’ve mentioned pushing a queen down with an excluder on a few hives. Can you talk a little bit about when that happens and what you see in those hives that makes you add an...

I use the block and rail configuration that many have mentioned here....but i find working the middle hives from the back of the hives more difficult than the two on the ends. I prefer them two by...

Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015-2018 treatment free experience

Squarepeg - Do you find you need to do anything to prevent late season swarms during the fall flow? Or do you think that "decision" by the bees has already been made and the spring...

Re: How do you indicate your hives status?

A Bluetooth earpiece works great for that. Hit record and leave the phone in a pocket. Still....it requires time to review and transcribe.

Re: New beekeeper - robbing on healthy colony

Looks like robbing to me. I second the recommendation for robbing screens. I've learned the hard way to run them most of the year on all hives and only take them off my full size hives during a flow.

    Re: tf queens

The only commercial queens I've used are Beeweaver and am quite happy with them. I've had some defensive ones when a production hive gets big and I start inspecting, but I've also had some incredibly...

    Re: Your queen spotting ideas?

I think it's a pattern recognition skill that just takes time and practice.

If you follow the #queenspotting tag on instagram, you can get some practice in - particularly from girlnextdoorhoney....

Re: Walk Away Hive Split Dilemma

Does the split have honey and pollen stores? Were there nurse bees on the brood? In my experience most of the foragers will return to the old hive but the nurse bees will not leave the brood. That...

Re: Aerial Spray Naled (Dibrom) What To Do?

Beeweaver put some information out too on their email list and Facebook. Here's the direct link:

    Re: Robber Screen Design

I don't think you missed the point. According to this note/handout from Dr. Eric C. Mussen from UC Davis Entomology (and my own observations), robbing screens do take advantage of the different...

Re: magnets to attach robber screen?

I wonder if the rare earth magnets are strong enough to mess with the bees' magnetoreception/navigation? I think I've read that bees use magneic fields for navigation similar to a pigeon, but I don't...

I'm fairly new at this - I know BWeaver but who sells Carpenter queens? (With a name like that, Google brings up the wrong kind of bee)

Anyone know what this bush with yellow flowers on it is? It grows about 6ft tall along Bear Creek south of Austin. The bees have been working it for a few weeks now.

I started with wedge top frames, but the wedge wasn't enough. I used 1" of milk carton (the waxed cardboard kind) strip. I "painted" the strips with wax from the crooked combs I yanked. The wedge...
