Re: Queen timing and inspection question

Thanks for the info. Could I ask for clarification to make sure I understand the timing?

On May 12 I saw no eggs, there were larvae present and a capped queen cell.

    If they killed the new...

    Queen timing and inspection question

Here's the question and the timing:

May 2 - removed old queen and placed her in a nuc with some bees and brood as insurance.
May 3 - introduced new purchased queen in cage with plug pushed in...

Re: Trying to figure out what happened

I had a similar situation with a package. Were your bees dead in front of the hive, on the bottom board or were there bees with their heads stuck in cells?
  4. New queen on the way, so how do I correct an old mistake?

    Hi,

I'm a 2nd year beek, and have overwintered a hive that came from a nuc late last spring. The nuc was suspect (long story: a disastrous late freeze with my first package, found a guy on...

Re: What to do with 2nd brood box?

Let me make sure I understand: "You can add undrawn frame in the brood nest every week or two depending on number of bees in the colony." If I combine the boxes I will have probably 3 frames the...

Re: What to do with 2nd brood box?

No - I am using wax frame and the nucs came with built out plastic frame.

What to do with 2nd brood box?

Good morning from the unusually rainy Texas Panhandle.

After purchasing a nuc in early June that was bursting with bees, I installed it into an 8 frame Langstroth. It appeared to be rapidly...

Re: How best to replace old frames/black comb?

Good advice - I'm trying to not take it personally when my charges ignore my best efforts.

    Re: Utah VS Texas

Would you consider the Panhandle of Texas? I have noticed, since just starting this year, that we have very few commercial operations that I know of - just one small one in my area. To get bees or...

Re: How best to replace old frames/black comb?

Thanks to all - I had been told in a class that the deepening color was a result of chemical/toxin build up, so was concerned. I'm not sure why I believed it - I don't believe in colon cleanses........

How best to replace old frames/black comb?

In desperation, I bought two late season nucs (late May) of Italians and the very old wood frames were covered in almost black comb on all sides of the frame. In their new 8 frame brood box, the...

Re: Package started out poorly - now decimated

I'm using white granulated sugar. I started with no additives, then put another jar on with Mann Lakes Pro Health at the feed stimulant concentration. They didn't take either syrup well.

Re: Package started out poorly - now decimated

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think my neighbors like me, but my hive is back in my dog run so they'd have to get past two slobbering Labradors.

It could be lawn chemicals in either our...

Re: Package started out poorly - now decimated

    Thanks for the ideas.
It would be too early here for mosquitoes (I'm in Amarillo and we are still having 40 degree nights), and the tarp was only on for two days and didn't cover the front entrance....

Package started out poorly - now decimated

Hi - I'm a new beekeeper and I really need some help identifying what has happened to my package of bees.

Short version: received package mid April, fed the bees a 1:1 syrup in a top feeder (not...
