    Re: Disappointing Fall Inspection

Weighing the hives is a good data point to have I guess but you haven't provided us with any information about the mite situation in your hives. Have you done mite counts? What method of mite...
  2. Re: This is getting ridiculous (Varroa and OAV treatment)

Interesting. Were you doing an experiment or something?

    Re: Disappointing Fall Inspection

I'll second the excellent advice by JoshuaW. If a hive that's light won't take syrup something is wrong. A lot of times it's a high mite load. Combining the weak ones and splitting in the spring...

Re: Wax moth prevention in storing

    Thanks RickR!
  5. Re: This is getting ridiculous (Varroa and OAV treatment)

I've seen inconsistent results with OAV as well. In order to have a shot at good results, it is so labor intensive it's impractical if you have more than a few hives even with a band heater...

Anyone have an Amazon link for the right BT to use?

    Re: No harvesting?

For mine, it's about two minutes from the start of vaporizing until it's back up to operating temperature. Easy vap sounds faster.

    Re: No harvesting?

ProVap (band heater). Faster than the wand style but still fairly slow.

How long have you been doing that? I'd love to hear any lessons learned or any other wisdom you'd have to share. Thanks...

    Re: No harvesting?

I was considering trying out the oxalic acid shop towels but not now because I have consistently heard it didn't work on the east coast. Even with a ProVap, I'm REALLY tired of my OAV only approach....

Re: healty hives that refuse to store food

I had a hive that did that last fall. They were low on stores but refused to take syrup. They looked okay otherwise but I knew something was wrong with them. They starved out in early December. ...
  14. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

I'm leaning toward trying that eric. Are you referring to Apiguard?
  15. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

Sorry for the delayed reply tbishop - that's an interesting thought. I did have a lot of swarms this year, as in, nearly all my stronger hives and nucs. You may very well be right in that the...
  16. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

In the middle of a mite crisis, the visual of a mite getting its feet dissolved is giving me some degree of satisfaction. ;)

    Re: Best Feeder (top, 8F)

I also use what I believe little_john is describing. An old mason quart jar with a few small nail holes punched it the lid, inverted over the inner cover hole in an empty super. Easy to do, no...
  18. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

All good points - thank you for the reply. I didn't measure the July drop. One lesson coming out of this is to do better monitoring, not rely on the calendar because, as you said, every year is...
  19. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

I am using the Florida Labs oxalic acid with the bag sealed up and stored inside. It seems to be working - I had a 400 mite drop overnight.
  20. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

Interesting. Thank you for the reply Oldtimer, sir. Do you use any other treatments or is it OAV exclusively?
  21. Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

    Background
I've had bees for six years now. My hive count has steady increased to 12 production hives and about 12 nucs. Production hives looked great during the flow and produced 120 pounds of...

    Re: Formic Pro deadouts

You use a good example. I see where you're coming from.
  24. Re: Will bees pull out wax in NE Tennessee in August if I feed them?

If you have a big hive, they may draw some comb in September when the real fall flow gets going but they're probably not going to do a lot, even then.
  25. Re: Maxant Bottling Tank: 16 gallon v. 25 gallon

I have the 25 gallon Maxant tank. I can lift fairly heavy items so it's not too bad for me to carry from one spot to another. I think it is worth the price difference of the 16 gallon.

    If you're...
