    Re: Nadir an active hive

My Grandfather developed a rather severe allergy to bees late in life after ignoring getting stung for 60 odd years. I try and keep it to limited stings but it seems anything invasive ends up with...

    Re: Nadir an active hive

Thanks I will try that next time (both the process and the foot wear). I have a full bee suit and gloves that seems to work pretty well. But I will wear boots next time.

    Re: Nadir an active hive

I don't "insist" on anything- rather I follow the information I have (in this case the Warre book). This is my second year keeping and I had two packages last year. This hive (The A hive) did quite...

    Nadir an active hive

Everyday I learn something; yesterday I learned that bees can sting through socks.

So Its late April here in Oregon and my overwinter hive is exploding with activity. They had two boxes of honey...

    Re: Late Summer dissapointment

With the price of bees I would plan on feeding them through the winter. Sounds like they didnt make comb. My first year I didnt feed them much and they were slow taking off and dies that winter. This...

My First Harvest from a live hive

Last spring I harvested from my dead hive and that was fairly straightforward. Harvesting from a live hive is not so much. I feel it could have gone better here is what I did:

    Friday morning I...

Re: When to add another box?

I am considering buying a whole hive and a queen and doing a split with the top boxes of my two hives. Not something i have done before but the idea of not having to buy a package of bees sounds good...

  10. Re: When to stop feeding a new package of bees?

So to update now July 1st: I fed both hives until the nectar flow was good. I could tell because the feeding went from every day a pint to everyother day all on their own. About the 1st of May. By...

Re: When to add another box?

I am kinda wondering the same thing but with a twist: i added the third box on each hive because they were both bearding even on cold nights which i took to mean they were running out of room. My "A"...
  12. Re: When to stop feeding a new package of bees?

Last year I followed that philosophy and gave the bees a few days of feeding and let them go. Their numbers declined through the spring and they didn't really have the level of activity one would...

Re: Greetings from the great Northwet.

We had the worst winter for bees on record; even experienced her keepers suffered heavy losses. My hive was doing ok in Feburary but we had one last cold snap of rain mixed with ice and snow in late...
  14. When to stop feeding a new package of bees?

I purchased two hives this year, one to replace my old bees and the other because after failing my natural instinct is to double down on my failure. I have two Warre hives made by a local guy and...

    Greetings from the great Northwet.

Hello. This is my second year beekeeping. Last year I lost my bees, so this year I doubled down on a second hive and intend to be more proactive about beekeeping. I have two Warre hives (because I am...
