    Re: Learned Lesson for 2019

I lost a lot of dead bees this year using Mann Lakes top feeder. Seems bees were getting in under the top cover and feeder, but couldn't get out. Didn't have this problem 2 years ago.
  3. Re: How many OAV treatments in winter can they tolerate?

The hard part is finding a day over 45 degrees when you are not working. The one treatment (OAV) in December works fine for me. Of course treated in aug/ sept too.

Re: open feeding in winter zone 5b

Best advice is from Gray Goose: Have a plan before you crack the lid in winter. You can add a sugar block or winter patty in 30 seconds if you have a plan.

I might as well ask. How did you treat for mites? A mite explosion has to be considered.

Re: Cleanning out wet frames but.......

Peter are you putting the wet super over your inner cover? If so and they still fill, try a empty box over the inner cover then the wet super on top of that.

Re: Closing them in for a day

I just had an outside party in my backyard. I have 4 hives that are only about 30 feet away from the tent for seated guests..No problem at all with bees. No stings. I was more worried about wasps or...

Just checked. Four of four alive and doing well. Three of the four needed another winter patty. 26 degrees and started snowing out. I do not know how long one winter patty from Mann Lake will last a...

Re: Feb 1st? All is well?

GWW- I noticed that you do not wrap your hives. That's great that they made it thru last week. -25 here without wind chill. I will be checking on Sunday. Hope all is well. I did notice that they were...

Yes they will draw it out. Especially if you put a coat of wax on them.

Re: Mann Lake Bee Pro patty storage

I freeze them too but I separate them into baggies/ wax paper first, otherwise the box becomes one big blob of a patty.

I agree it was a down year for honey yield. My top deeps are pretty heavy and there is a lot of goldenrod around but it has been so rainy I don't know if they can get to it. Will check the weight and...

Re: Does anyone use thermal cameras?

One issue is that they do not work if a hive is wrapped in winter which most of ours will be in the North.. It is almost easier to just knock on the side and listen or lift the cover for a quick look...

Re: Add Deep, Medium Super or Both

I would add the second deep and feed 1:1 syrup. They will draw it out fast for both brood and nector storage. Then add your drawn medium super after 7-8 frames are drawn out. You always need drawn...

    Re: ants

Cinnamon does work well for me. Sprinkle liberally around hive and even on top of inner cover. The bees ignore it. Buy at Costco in bulk.
Have to re-spread after a rain.
