  1. What would cause the hive to be filled with dead bees?

I have some bees at a remote yard and the property owner showed me a picture of the inside of the hive, from a warm day. The entire hive's worth of bees are piled up on the bottom board inside the...

    Re: Mushroom treatment for varroa

This video is pretty fascinating https://youtu.be/7agK0nkiZpA

He has some numbers for viral load reduction based on mushroom and dose. (At about 27:51 https://youtu.be/7agK0nkiZpA?t=1671)

    I...
  3. Re: What to do with frames/comb from empty hive (now infested with pests)

If I do not have a freezer, would spraying the frames with vinegar work? Right now I am taking most of the frames and just throwing out the foundation and harvesting the wax. Seems like a huge...
  4. What to do with frames/comb from empty hive (now infested with pests)

I have a hive that apparently swarmed and left. The hive was robbed out and then infested with shb and wax moths. I am not sure how all this could happen in less than two weeks, but I guess it did....
  5. Re: How long can I keep a bee escape board on a hive?

    Ok. That seems wise.
  6. How long can I keep a bee escape board on a hive?

How long can I keep a bee escape on a hive before they will either get wise or my honey will be at risk to hive beetles or other pests?

    Re: Manipulation Cloth

Seems like I wound need a pretty heavy cloth to keep it from being carried away by the wind. I also worry about the sign sailing away when I turn my back. A canvas cloth with sand sewn in seems...

    Manipulation Cloth

Anybody used a manipulation cloth when inspecting hives? Some of my hives have an inner cover, and I sometimes use that to help keep the bees calm. I like the idea of the cloth, but as it is...
  10. Re: Straining honey -was size micron do you use?

If I use 400 or 200 micron, will that remove the pollen from the honey and make it less useful for people who buy the honey for allergies?

    Re: tick control

    Avoid spraying them with it.

Read about the toxicity with contact to a target, after the permethrin has dried.

    Re: tick control

You could take a look at permethrin. I woud spray it after the dusk, on-label, for tick control. I have not tried this on grass, etc, but I do treat my protective clothing (bee suit) etc. Sawyer...

    Re: Shou Sugi Ban

I tried using 1:1 linseed oil and Pine tar on a new round of equipment. It works and I would use it again when I do not have "outdoor defense oil", but the pine tar gives it a smell like a an old...

Re: Small hive beetle and oil traps

It was for me. After spending far too much time trying to save bee from being tangled in the sheets, I give up on this method.

    Re: Shou Sugi Ban

I used Half Tung Oil & Half Citrus Solvent from Real Milk Paint. half-and-half But in the future I plan to use their outdoor defense oil.

Net: Inspected and found capped (and emerging) drones, and nectar.

I inspected some of the hive today. There are two deeps, and three mediums. I saw frame after frame of either capped drones,...

    Re: Rain kill? (Top entrance)

Seems to me the ideal would be to have have an inner bottom board that is slightly sloped, say a 3% grade, while keeping the hive perpendicular to the ground, with no slope.

    I really wish there...
