Re: Set It and Forget It?

sp: I had not read about your EFB outbreak. I am very sorry. I have followed your journey and support your efforts. I know that was a major blow to you.
  2. Re: Finishing capped cells after day 5 without a mechanical incubator

I think I am following you.

First question: Will they draw new cells with the queen cells of graft 1 in the same hive body? Bees will do some weird things, but I do not think they will do...

Re: Set It and Forget It?

My bees are currently in our mid-summer dearth and they are pissy. Hey, have you guys eaten today?

Re: Sticky Board Varroa Drop Count

Yes. You need to treat for varroa. You have two options in Alabama in June. Both will require that you remove your honey supers.

One option is Oxalic Acid Vaporization. Since we still have a...

    Re: Dropped Frame, Queen Survive?

First, queens are hardy insects and you are likely fine.

To directly answer your questions though: In 4 days, if you see eggs she is fine. In 8 days, if you see open larva, she is fine.

    I am...

    Re: Too soon?

I think your questions will best be answered by an experienced beekeeper in your geographic area. For me, it would be far too late to put on any honey supers. But my area/climate/forage is...

Re: Set It and Forget It?

Unfortunately, the tone of a message board post is inaudible, so we all seem to tend to read the worst into a stranger's intentions. With that said, I assure you that I do not intend to challenge...

    Re: Super Size?

My opinion is No. If weight truly is not an issue, then I would exclusively use deeps and would never complicate my operation by anything other than one uniform frame size. Weight is a very large...
  9. Re: SHB larva on honey frame, will the whole batch ferment?

Lord no. If that were the case, I would only have fermented honey — all 1000+ pounds of it a year. Relax Paula. One SHB larva is absolutely nothing to concern yourself with. Your hive and your...

Re: Black Foundation For Honey Supers

The absolute best visibility of eggs is a white egg sitting on a black foundation with fresh white/yellow wax built out around it. Anybody can see those eggs. As they start raising rounds of brood,...

Re: What do you use to help see when grafting

I just got these and they worked beautifully. And they were only about $15 on amazon. Adjustable LED light.

  13. Re: Need quick answer pls: Hive work ok just after rain?

It is absolutely fine to work them in the rain. I worked mine in the rain all of this past weekend. They will not think highly of you. Wear your gear. They are often pissy in the rain.
  14. Re: Changing the box of a new colony due to a defect

They will be fine if you want to swap their box out.

Re: Black Foundation For Honey Supers

A few cocoons do not bother me in the honey super. After the comb gets several brood cycles, it becomes rubbery and harder to uncap.

Each year I do splits prior to supering my hives. I assume...

    Re: Rotating Treatments Question

My climate does not allow me to use formic and greatly limits my ability to use thymol. I use to be a very big Apiguard fan, but I have had too many absconsions because of temps creeping up during...

Re: When & how to harvest honey.

    Jase:

Sorry this is off-topic, but I wanted to make sure you knew about the 9th Annual North Alabama Beekeeper Symposium that will be held in Athens, Alabama on August 17. I have been to this...
  19. Re: How much honey to give your hive land sponsors

I think what Kamon said here is more important than the honey. Most landowners that allow this arrangement simply like the "idea" of bees on their property. They think it is neat, or they think it...

Re: Black Foundation For Honey Supers

I am slowly working all yellow foundation out of my equipment in favor of black. At some point in my operation, my older honey super frames get promoted (or demoted?) to serve as brood frames. I...

Re: OAV Treatment with new Queen?

You have 7-8 days from the day she first starts laying to OAV without capped brood present. Ideally, I would OAV on day 7. She should not abscond with a week's worth of eggs and larva in the hive.

  23. Re: looking for opinions on placement of Mite Away Quick Strip

I don't know how hot it is in Ohio right now, but watch your weather and apply during a cool spell. The allowable temp shown on the MAQS directions (85F) is way too high IMO.
