  1. Re: next step if brood deep is nearly full now that there's a dearth?

We are in a dearth until late August or September so they have limited resources available to collect. Unless they don't have room (empty cells), I wouldn't add any more space for them to patrol. ...

Re: Bees removing almost all brood

The only time I recall seeing this in my hives was right before one absconded. It was almost like they were cleaning house before leaving. I didn't realize what was happening at the time so I...

Re: Keeping bees in the city

The Ritz Carlton in Charlotte used to have hives on the roof. I'm not sure if they are still there. There was a cookie and pastry bar downstairs where you could sample flavored honeys from the...

That seems about right for our area.

    Re: SHB and Shade

I have better results in full sun. However, I also think it's important to keep the bees to comb ratio high in the summer. Few bees on a comb make it harder to defend.

Re: bee pulling larvae out, help!

Sounds like some of the brood died during treatment but it could also be a number of things this time of year. Getting rid of drones, downsizing, etc. as others have mentioned. I've also had hives...

Re: are new jars clean enough?

I just bought a bunch of glass mason jars and couldn't stand the smell of the inside of the jars right out of the box. I care about what I provide to my customers and I care about what my customers...

    Re: Honey flow Piedmont NC

Our late privet will bloom through the middle of June and we still have clover and a few other minor things the bees are working. However, my hives stopped gaining weight about two weeks ago based...

    Re: Honey flow Piedmont NC

My hives in the country have slowed to a crawl. Hives in the city are still gaining slightly and still have privet left. I weigh mine every time I inspect so I have some idea of who is gaining and...
  12. Re: Gave split another frame of eggs. They did not make a queen cell.

I've had hives where I thought there should be a newly mated queen but I didn't see eggs or larvae when I should have per the calendar. I gave them wet frames of brood just as insurance to see if...

    Re: Pollen = Laying Queen?

My bees seem to bring pollen into my hives whether they are raising brood or not. In fact, I've had splits bring in so much pollen and nectar while they were raising a queen that I wondered where...
  14. Re: How Heavy do You Like Your Hives Going into Winter?

My target is 100 pounds total weight. I winter in two deeps or three mediums. I had good success this year with reversing in late winter and checkerboarding honey frames. I'm in the foothills of...

    How to say "nuc"

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I'm wondering what the proper pronunciation of "nuc" might be.

I have always pronounced it "nuke" since it is short for nucleous hive. "Sacks" is short for...
  16. Re: Building a Tiny Swarm Into a Viable Colony?

I've did this successfully last year but had to add a frame or two of capped brood and a frame of stores. It took them a year to build up to production strength. This March I split them four ways. ...

    Re: Jan 1st pollen

Maples are budding early and I was seeing almost white pollen along with yellow from likely all the dandelions in bloom. Had a cloud of orientation flights Sunday. Cold returned this week though.

Re: First Winter on 8 frame mediums

I have limited experience as well, but if they are completely empty, I take them off. Others do not and that's fine too. I agree with sterling and wouldn't manipulate them this late as far as...

Re: First Winter on 8 frame mediums

I have a couple 8 frame mediums and I typically go into winter with three or four boxes with 8 frame mediums. I have one now that's three mediums high and weighs about 95 pounds. I would remove the...

    Re: Hive Location Suburban Backyard

My vote would be for #1. During queenless periods, they can get testy until the new queen is laying. I like them away from my family and dog during those times. Shady spots have always been...

I've smelled a foul smell for short periods of time when, I think, my bees are working goldenrod. This year, it was a short period between yellow crown beard and aster. To me, the aster smells like...

Re: North Carolina Winter Preparation Questions

Most of my production hives are 80 to 100 pounds and I run three medium ten-frames and four medium 8-frames for winter. I have a couple that are in the 75 pound range though. They seem light to me...

    Re: Hive humidity problems

I typically place the inner cover over the hive top feeder and have not experienced the same problem with mold. I also prop up the outer cover just slightly to provide additional ventilation.
