  1. Re: What are best practices to maximize population count at honey flow?

Lots of good info in there Michael! Thank you so much! I always appreciate your replies in these forums... Always enough information!

I'll ask more beeks around here about precise bloom dates...
  2. Re: What are best practices to maximize population count at honey flow?

Thanks! I know I'll be walking a tight rope against swarming until the flow hits, just hope I can handle it (hobbyist/sideline keeper, not a lot of time left after 40hr work week and wife/baby). To...
  3. What are best practices to maximize population count at honey flow?

I'm curious as to the best practices to maximize brood production, and colony population, when the honey flow kicks off this year. My main nectar source is Tulip Poplar, with clover and other misc....

Re: OK to use queen cages for brood break?

I appreciate your help! The flow is starting/on here already, so I've missed that window, but I was hoping to be able to allow brood breaks for multiple hives at once (cheaply), as I am drained on...

Re: OK to use queen cages for brood break?

I'm assuming you are talking about capped qc's, if that's the case then isn't it a week until she emerges and another week until she starts laying? Isn't that to short for a 20 day period?

OK to use queen cages for brood break?

I'm thinking ahead for this fall and planning a brood break. I did most all my splits late in the summer, thus causing a brood break, and had (what I feel) is good success overwintering by only...
  8. Re: How to get comb drawn on honey supers w/o feed?

no, i standardized my yard with all deeps at first, then purchased the honey supers later once they could build up enough to get honey. so all of my deep frames are drawn and none of my honey supers...
  9. Re: How to get comb drawn on honey supers w/o feed?

no excluders anywhere. I also have top entrances drilled into the honey supers to help them get in and out a bit quicker.
  10. Re: How to get comb drawn on honey supers w/o feed?

That was what my plan was last year; feed as much as they would take (gallons every few days) to get comb drawn...they have no problem working deep frames, but this is the second year in a row they...
  11. How to get comb drawn on honey supers w/o feed?

I have about 5 hives (double deeps, overwintered, queenright and booming) with honey supers on. All of the hive body frames are drawn. The flow is on here and bees are steadily filling the frames in...
  12. Re: Saw 1-2 small hive beetles one week after package install. Concern level?

ive gotten packages with SHB already in it. the solution to them is more bees.
  13. Re: New Package - How Long Before Queen Starts Laying

I say if it's a good queen you should be seeing some eggs as soon as comb is started, if not before.

I've had new queens lay on bare pasticell foundation...guess she was trying to hurry the...

Re: Acceptable gap in box joints

I've gotten unassembled boxes that must have been cut after the company's happy hour lunch. cuts crooked as can be.

The bees seem to not mind, and I would just take some wide painter's tape and...

Re: About To Give UP TF

Is it hard to stay TF while keeping first year packages or queens purchased from treated yards...or is it hard to stay TF while using genes from natural colonies?

I guess I'm asking, are you still...

Re: low temperature, wind and flying bees

bees don't read the same books as us, or follow the same instructions.

I've seen my bees out flying in weather such as you described, when I thought they'd prefer to be clustered up inside.

    the...

    Re: Can I split now?

I am just a bit south of you and have already done two splits. Queens have emerged from their cells and I'm waiting on signs that their mating flights were successful.

I split once I saw capped...

    Re: Downside of migratory tops?

I'm trying MC this year after using TC last year... I can forsee some water leakage early on but the bees should propolize any significant gaps (remember, they live in hollowed out trees!). Aside...

    Re: Hives filling up fast!

for the past two weeks I've seen drones in the hives, along with several frames of thick drone brood ready to emerge.

several of my hives are double deeps, with brood already in both boxes, darn...

Re: Best feeder for 5 Frame nucs

I know this is taboo, but I use an entrance feeder (when weather is permitting), and then fashion a bit of screen over the rest of the opening as a robber screen.

    Re: distributing deadout resources

thanks all. I brought the capped frames inside...they managed to rob about 3 frames in two days. I have a 5 framer that needs at least one frame of honey in so that's that...
