Re: Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

Do you freeze them before storing? If not, you are storing the frames with viable moth eggs. Freeze for 3 days and then store in plastic. Using moth crystals is prohibited if you want to obtain...
  2. Re: Retired veterinarian bees have no nectar sourcears

My second year, my mentor told me to feed my bees or they were going to die. This was in July, typically a great time of year for foraging where I live. It was very rainy but I didn't really didn't...

    Re: Sourwood is lookin' good!!

The other thing I noticed is that this year, we have not had storms that blow the blooms from the trees. I always can tell when the sourwood is over because I see the flowers on the ground under the...

    Re: Sourwood is lookin' good!!

I am in North Georgia and i am pulling supers next week. I hope the bees are not foraging on mountain laurel. It creates poisonous honey.

    Re: Locking up a hive

I would put a screened lid on it and put an awning over it as little_john suggests.

    Re: Locking up a hive

How populated are the hives? If they are packed, I would move the hive. At the very least, I would put a screened lid on the hives so the heat can escape.

    Re: Queenless and honey bound

Are you in a dearth right now? The queen will stop or severely reduce egg laying in a dearth. I made the mistake of thinking I was queenless and bought a queen which was balled when I introduced it.

Re: What have you found to be the best way to

This may sound tedious, but I remove a frame at a time, shake off all the bees and put the frame into empty box that I can cover. I used to use a blower to get the bees off but I always had...

    Pollen in Honey Super

    Hi,
I have one hive that has 4 frames in the honey super where half of each side is filled with pollen and the other half has capped honey. It is packed with bee bread. Would I extract the frames?...

    Re: bees bearding

I also use SBB's but this year, I was short on bottom boards so I had to buy 5 solid bottoms from Mann Lake. Last week, the bees that were on the solid board had been bearding for a couple days. I...

    Re: bees bearding

It could be that the hive interior is too hot and the bees beard to allow it to cool a bit. If you use a popsicle stick (flat side down) or some other thin prop under the inner cover, it will...

    Re: Bottling question

Do I regret not getting the 25 gallon tank? Yes and no. I hate hefting 5 gallon buckets to fill the tank so a bigger tank would be nicer. The other thing is that I do not have a honey room so I am...

    Re: Bottling question

One of my best investments was a Maxant 16 gallon bottling tank. Their valve is outstanding and only has one drip after filling a bottle. The standard cheap honey gate drips quite a bit after...

    Re: Combining 2 Dink Hives

One hive has 5 frames filled, the other has 7. I was going to snuff the one with 5 frames.

    Combining 2 Dink Hives

    All,
I have 2 hives that were created from packages in March. They are still in one box while the other packages are in double deeps and some even have a honey super on them. I want to snuff one...

    Re: Nosema and Comb

When you said "a mountain of recently dead bees", that sounds like starvation. I thought nosema bees would fly off and die.

    Re: Probably over thinking this.

I use shingles as a weed block. I go to HD and see if they have any shingle bundles that have been broken open. If they have any, they typically sell them pretty cheap otherwise they get thrown...

Re: Adding Supers, which is better

If all foundation, I would remove the QE for a few weeks. Shake the bees off each frame to make sure the queen is not trapped and then re-install the QE.

    Re: squaring box corners

I take the box out of the jig as soon as the fasteners are put in. Once released from the jig, I staple the places I can't reach while the box is in the jig. My pneumatic stapler is the only way to...

    Re: squaring box corners

When I first started building boxes, I got tired of having to use a square and endless adjustments to get a box built. To help me get square boxes quickly, I built a jig which makes putting boxes...

    Re: Rotating Treatments Question

A speaker at our club said that OAV appears to have a physical reaction from the bees or mites. OAV either cuts the mites or stimulates the bees to start grooming. As such, mites can't develop...

    Re: Comb honey pollen cells

I agree! I had a hard time selling the comb and chunk honey quarts. I put a few comb frames in this year but not as many as last year.

Perhaps drones robbing? Are you sure they are drones? A dead bee on the ground after a day is pretty messed up.
Put something under the entrance daily to catch the dead bees to see if it is a...
