    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Right - potentially.
They are really fudging the #s to make it look good.
I can see few one-time rate changes (IF approved by the utility regulators), but not the continuous growth of them.
    I...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Lots of good ideas.
    No time to respond yet.

BUT in general - issues of warranty/roof repairs/etc - I was verbally assured that just about everything is covered in some way.
    By the salesperson,...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Like I said:

IF anything, I am yet to be convinced in the solar's worth personally to me.
Being "green" and all, there is no free cash here to be throwing at expensive toys with unclear...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

Without much analysis - I just intuitively feel this is probably the case (which is our case too).

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

Thanks for the feedback so far.
I am yet to digest it, item by item.

I went ahead and took the time to scrub the proposal off any sensitive info.
    And here it is attached.
    The proposal does NOT...

    Re: The 'Gallup' Long Hive.

LJ, thanks for taking the time and the pics. Nice.

With my CVs, I too want to have a frame size (hence my new "standard" to be) where the frame is ~fully dedicated to a single use.
    Per my youtube...

    Re: Why/Why NOT go Solar.

    Thanks for the pointers.

    Actually, I am decidedly NO.

But now that I got the estimate #s (they insisted), I want to see how they are trying to manipulate people into such projects.
    My boss got...

    Why/Why NOT go Solar.

So, I got a free estimate for putting up solar panels onto my roof (this is Southern-Central WI).
I am not really sold; but the free estimate is FREE.

When I clean up the PDF so it can be...

Re: CVH (Compact Vertical Hive) by GregV

Another feature of this particular CVH - box-to-box partial compatibility with 10-frame Lang boxes.
This is one reason why I decided to build the first batch of boxes by just recycling the Lang...
  11. Re: Management practices that lead to winter survival

Well, the darn thing is none of my bees die in summer.
I always suspected my location is chemical-free!
Will keep reusing those dark combs I stashed away.
    LOL
  12. Re: Customized Broodnest (Brother Adam, Hans Beer)

It is a beautiful thing to have a hobby and do whatever the heck you want regardless of outside advice and opinions.
Personally, I get more than enough surplus honey for my needs, and then some.
    No...

    odfrank,
Do not forget to remind your readers you are located in sub-tropics.

San Mateo County, California is in USDA Hardiness Zones 9b, 10a and 10b...

    Then do it.
What was the hang-up with shaking and all? Not really necessary.

    Re: Shake bees?

Instead - just shake into an empty pocket next to the target colony (separated by a dummy board or a newspaper with slits and a small passage).
Or similarly - shake them into an empty box above the...
  16. Re: Customized Broodnest (Brother Adam, Hans Beer)

    psycain89-Germany,
If anyone here is a proponent of dummy boards and variable nest sizes - this is me.
In this regard, customized brood-nest and dummy boards - nothing new, but rather a routine as...
  17. Re: Management practices that lead to winter survival

So Roland, how do you identify a colony that perished over the winter predominantly due to pesticide contaminated comb?
    I am ready to learn.

Re: CVH (Compact Vertical Hive) by GregV

It is a shame I forgot to take a picture to demonstrate how stable the stack is.
I would move it around and tilt it as I wished.
One can easily lean the tower all way to 60-70 degrees and it holds...

Re: CVH (Compact Vertical Hive) by GregV

There was a question/concern with the pegged design - it seems no way to slide the boxes (so to reduce the # of bees squashed).
With the pegs facing down, you can slide the boxes - not a problem....
  20. Re: Customized Broodnest (Brother Adam, Hans Beer)

The so-called standards are not the law to follow.
Everyone does what they want and what they are able to.

Sure - nothing wrong with 6-8-10 supers.
    As in here:...
  21. Re: Customized Broodnest (Brother Adam, Hans Beer)

    Of course, you are not.
There are many ways to do this exact thing and achieve similar results.

  23. Re: Customized Broodnest (Brother Adam, Hans Beer)

This is exactly what many people say.
Meanwhile the guy just smiles and keeps extracting the honey from his 100-hive trailer ALL summer long - May to August.
Nothing wrong with the work IF you...

Re: Horizontal hive in hot climate

Of course, Africa is the second largest continent in the World and you'd need to pay attention to the local details.
Still, the top bars hives have been developed specifically with Africa in mind -...

    Re: They keep taking syrup

This time a year in Northern IL and WI the local bees need to be shutting down anyway.
The September bees here ARE the winter bees.
I would not worry of being honey bound - what they take, they...
