1 to 3 queens Now, not after almonds

Wanting a queen in Sacramento area, or maybe 2-3 depending on price. Wanting her now, not after pollination contracts. Thanks!

Re: My self centering top bars

I have never had top bars that didn't have bee space along the ends. The bees attach the comb to these top bars the same as the regular ones. I haven't had combs fall to the floor of the hive.

Re: My self centering top bars

I figured sharing my ideas back here for free is a small price to pay for the advice I have picked up.

I do like the ring of McCoy top bar. I already use Real McCoy Honey on my labels. I usually...

Re: My self centering top bars

Two more images showing a closer up detail of one of the ends, and a view down the length of the bar.

Re: My self centering top bars

Here are images of one top bar by itself, and in the hive to show how the centering notches work.

    My self centering top bars

    Hi All,
I am repairing a neglected top bar hive for a "bee sanctuary" we have in Davis. It is basically a community apiary that has mostly been abandoned due to high ant pressure. Now that we...

    Re: Power For A Vaporizer

    Correct about the "pan" heater.
Tractor battery is a more reliable choice for sure. The small lithium starters are so dang light though. I have about 1/4 mile walk to the hives and would love to...

Sticky: Re: diy oxalic acid vaporizer

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I have a modification to a cheap vaporizer I bought off of ebay that others might like to use. My Lang hives have screened bottoms so they need...

    Re: Power For A Vaporizer

Anyone else have luck with one of these small lithium jump starters? Hoping to find one that doesn't turn itself off thinking that the connection is shorting out.

The price was good and I only...

I strongly second the idea of an inexpensive weight sensor that monitors remotely.
Temp and humidity would be nice too but you already heard the challenges there and frankly thats the hives job to...

Two pics I couldn't fit in the previous post.

  12. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

The middle section was missing the lip, so I connected a set of 4 top bars together to span the gap.

At the ends, the shape of the sides left some gaps, so I cut some scrap wood to cover...
  13. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

    GregV and odfrank win.

The cardboard ice chest was close to the right size to take top bars, but not quite the right size. I went ahead and did the work to turn it into a pretty nice swarm hive,...
  14. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

I figured I started this thread so I should invest in testing it out.
I ordered one of the 42 L "Ohana" coolers today. I will try to take some pictures once it arrives and document what mods I make...

    Re: Black Sugar Ants

I might put one of those Terro ant baits on the cover.

You should look and see where they are coming from. Are they congregating under the cover, but climbing up the legs, or have they moved into...
  16. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

Thanks for all the input. I will consider myself warned odFrank. Sometimes you have to figure out HOW you want to waste your time and this doesn't seem the worst way (yet).
    Although if you have...

Re: NeverWet Ant Barrier cheap and easy

That is the stuff. Sorry I didn't post a link before, but I figured amazon links change and thought just searching for the word would work better. Apparently not.
  18. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

    My thoughts were:
    1) already waterproof so a bit more resistant to weather
    2) has an integrated rim that can (might?) support bars.
    3) it looks a little more like it is something real. If I am...
  19. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

Note: shipping is an addition $9 for 1 and $12 for the pack of three so that does change the price quite a bit.
  20. Re: New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

That looks like a better size, and the price is even a little lower, at least before you calculate shipping. Not sure what the dimensions are, but that rim might hold a top bar or frame. Thanks for...
  21. New igloo disposable ice chest as a swarm trap?

I saw an add for this new disposable ice chest that is supposed to be an alternative to styrofoam. Looks an awful lot like the swarm traps you can buy, but better suited for some top bars and...

Re: NeverWet Ant Barrier cheap and easy

I have a hive in an area with a SERIOUS ant problem. Thanks for the useful advice in this thread. I have resorted to using two barriers as this seems to be the only thing that works consistently...

Re: laying workers in top bar hive

    Thanks for the advice.

Will queen excluder keep laying workers out?

I've been through the hive a couple times now and not seen a queen. It is always possible I missed her but tried my best on...

Re: laying workers in top bar hive

Two details I neglected to mention. I installed a divider board in the hive, and there is a feeder in the end where I would put the queen.

laying workers in top bar hive

Hived a swarm. Looked for the queen but didn't find her. I was out of town. It has been 3 weeks and now I have laying workers and a bunch of brood, not yet capped, but almost certainly drone brood....
