Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

If it's hard being forced to say no to a friend, show him this thread to help him see reason.

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

Millar has said he is mentoring the guy. Which would indicate the other guy is a new inexperienced beekeeper. Probably read some of that TF stuff on the internet and is now enthused to try it out.

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

As an aside, i have several times been approached by "friends", who have a hive or two they cannot find a home for, ask me if they can put them in one of my bee yards.

    Although very uncomfortable...

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

    I would worry, yes.

If his hives get loaded up with mites, they will very definately spread into your hives.

It is completely unreasonable for him to carry out his TF experiment, in your...
  5. Sticky: Re: treating vs. not treating for mites: opinion thread

LOL. If they use non resistant bees, the results are a forgone conclusion, why even run the trial.

I didn't know Juhani, that someone in Hawaii had bred 100% VSH bees. How heritable is that down...

    Re: Bee's Gone

No the reverse is the case. As bees sicken and die from mite related pathogens, the dying bees get as far away from the hive as they can, and one of the tell tale signs when a hive has died of mites...

    Re: Bee's Gone

That's pretty good advice Grey Goose.

I do something similar but a bit less formalised, I'll allow a bad season at a site, 2 bad seasons at a site and i pull the bees.

    Re: Bee's Gone

OK well saying the number of mites was not a lot, could be an issue. One mans not a lot, may not be the bees not a lot.

Wether to re use the combs depends what the hive died of. If it was just...

    Re: iPhone Microwaves Causes Absconding

Thing is, the OP made no mention of transmitting or anything else. The claim was very simple. You put an iphone on the hive lid, and the bees immediately start to abscond.

    Well there we have it,...

    Re: iPhone Microwaves Causes Absconding

Can also relate a personal experience about this. There used to be a rather oddball guy in my area who ran a hive rental business. He would douse the persons property to find the best spot to put the...

    Re: iPhone Microwaves Causes Absconding

Same here. I thought dousing was a load of hogwash until i visited a friend who had just had a well driller in who doused to find where to drill. As we walked around we found his dousing wire and i...

    Re: iPhone Microwaves Causes Absconding

LOL you tested gravity with your iphone? Yup sounds dangerous. :D

This one is a myth. It was thought up by the self improvement industry, the figure commonly quoted is we only use 10% of our...
  16. Re: Oil of artemisia - effective mite treatment.

Unfortunately the video did not show him doing it and I could not understand the guy.

Could you explain the method Greg?

Checked out local supply of Artemisia Oil and it runs about US$10 per...

    Re: Bee's Gone

Betcha 2 things. 1 your mite counts were done by a less than reliable method, and 2 you didn't treat for mites.

Re: I had an Old school beekeeper check my hives

Agree with that, to me, he was rough.

Although in his defence, he was forced to work the hives from the back because you have them hard up to each other. I really dislike working hives from the...

    Re: Varroa 12%

    How new?

If you have been around long enough to know you have bees that can deal with varroa, you could choose to eliminate this hive to just keep the varroa resistant genetics.

    But if you are...

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

Sure, but that 99% of them died despite having natural comb and not being fed sugar, demonstrates there is more to it than that.

My own reading indicates that a large part of it is genetics. Not...

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

Oh i forgot to add that to the list. Some people think the secret is not feeding sugar.

But they forgot all those wild hives that died of mites didn't get fed sugar LOL

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

Just to fully explain TehachapiGal, in some areas people are keeping bees without treating for mites, in other areas they must be treated or as you say, they will die.

    Nobody quite knows why,...
