Re: Deep super full of honey

When you say 'deep super', do you really mean a brood box? What is the layout of your hive(s) and where are you located?

    Re: Weak Hive

If you had the feeder in the 1&2 or 9&10 positions in a 10 frame Lang, they might not be too quick to draw those frames out if that's where you put the new frames (assuming foundation).

    I have...

    Re: Aggression after mite treatment

Yeah, keeping them in the freezer significantly extends the shelf-life. As long as they haven't turned yellow, they're good. I've kept them for over a year, some might be approaching two years now. I...

Re: 1st ever sting and no swelling ?

I got a large number of stings on my wrists (through my gloves) when an adverse event caused me to kill a lot of bees. My wrists turned bright red and felt like they were on fire, but there did not...

    Re: Aggression after mite treatment

I store mine in the freezer as well, as does my supplier, and put them on frozen too. I keep them in a cooler going out to the yard, so that they do not thaw too quickly (before I finish all of the...
  6. Re: beekeeping 101 question- opening hives- and package bee question

Because bees want to go UP ^.

Sometimes the bees will do the right thing themselves, but often they will not.

I am up at a similar latitude as you are, maybe even a little further North. When...

Re: All hives empty in three weeks.

    What was your 'inspection' method?

You can still treat...using something other than formic acid.
  8. Re: Neighbor contesting our beekeeping permit - advice for the upcoming hearing?

Since the problem has been 'solved' I won't go on about the non-sensical nature of the ordinance and the neighbor's objection...but, I am still curious as to *why* (referencing the creation of the...

    Re: Smoker Fuel

I run a pellet stove in the Winter, so I usually have pellets around and that's what I use. It's a lot more convenient to use them, instead of gathering up the pine straw or hay.

    Lighting is easy...
  10. Re: Hive Inspection - Questions about burr comb and bottom board (Screened)

Yep, sometimes, no matter how careful you might try to be, somebody somewhere gets squished.
  11. Re: My hives have some issues and I am lost

Unfortunately, I don't know what a 'piping' queen sounds like, I expect it is out of the range of my hearing. I lost some of my hearing in the Army, everything above 12,000Hz is gone completely. It...

    Re: Post swarm actions

Ah, gotcha. The way I read it, I thought you went looking *after* you knew both had swarmed.

    Re: Post swarm actions

If you *knew* they swarmed, and there are queen cells present, why 'look' for queens? They aren't there, they left with the swarms.

If they were my hives, I would just leave the queen cells and...

    Re: Winter in 'Cold Country'...

I definitely appreciate that info, thanks. I was wondering what I would do when the supply ran out. I did some other experiments inre fumagillin and nosema, and the results were not promising. Hives...

    Winter in 'Cold Country'...

How you prep your bees for Winter depends on where you live and what sort of conditions you can expect to encounter. When I lived in central Texas, it was rare for the Winter temps to get below the...
  16. Re: Need some guidance...Bee Hive B...Good...Bee Hive A...not so well...

Excellent. Get 'em started young- maybe it will take, maybe it won't...and maybe they'll do something else for a while and then come back to it.

When I was young, my old man tried to teach me some...
  17. Re: Hive Inspection - Questions about burr comb and bottom board (Screened)

Ya, it just helps avoid confusion. When you say 'super' (means 'above') a lot of us are going to think that you are talking about a medium or short box that goes above the brood boxes to collect...

    Re: Missing Queen(s)

Sounds to me like you were too late putting on the second box, and your original queen swarmed, capped brood emerging was enough to make it so that you didn't notice that there were bees gone.

    As...
  19. Re: Need some guidance...Bee Hive B...Good...Bee Hive A...not so well...

Ah, must be something else that I'm seeing, up at the corner of the building. Whatever it is kind of looks like a hive from that angle. But now that I've taken another look, I see that you marked the...

    Re: Summer Inspections

My supplier treats the nucs for mites as they are made up (oxalic acid dribble). Do you know whether or not your nucs were already treated, and if so, with what?

Do you know what level the mites...

    Re: Summer Inspections

You need to be involved on a fairly regular and frequent basis, given mites, AHB and other issues.

If you don't want to treat for mites, your workload goes waaaaaaay up.
  23. Re: My hives have some issues and I am lost

Perhaps, if there were a number of likely viable cells. But if there is only one cell and that candidate is the 'best' they had, maybe despite their efforts it isn't good enough, a few hours too old,...
  24. Re: My hives have some issues and I am lost

Did you miss the part where he described what sounds like a hive with a failing queen and a single supercedure cell...which may or may not be viable?

There are a lot of times when I'm in favor of...
  25. Re: Hive Inspection - Questions about burr comb and bottom board (Screened)

It looks to me like they were building comb to raise drones. I often see drone comb built wherever they can find a place to put it, since I don't give them any. It is often hung off the bottom of the...
