    Re: Converting to Mediums

Majority of my nearly 40 hives are 8 frames mediums...love the convenience, and ease to work with. Make my own boxes, 1x8s a lot cheaper than 1 x12s. Biggest draw back, if I wanted to sell nucs or...

Re: Lyson Manual Steam Uncapper Review

The steam travels enclosed within the blade...as long as the blade remains intact it should be no problem. I should also mention the blade is not knifelike sharp, nor is it stovelike hot...I thought...

Re: Lyson Manual Steam Uncapper Review

AstroBee, I guess it depends where you purchased it. Blue Sky Bee Supply calls theirs the Lyson "Manual Steam Uncapper" https://www.blueskybeesupply.com/manual-steam-uncapper-lsu/ ...but you're...

Re: Lyson Manual Steam Uncapper Review

Yeah. I was thinking instead of getting a 20+ frame, maybe a 15-frame extractor that I can run in parallel with my 9-frame.

Re: 2018 journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

I pulled 50 gallons in April just to clear off the hives for the main flow. Early honey around here has an after taste that isn't that pleasant. While the main flow honey has a smooth caramel...

    Lyson Manual Steam Uncapper Review

I took the plunge and moved up from manual uncapping with a knife to a Lyson Manual Steam Uncapper (the version that sits on top of an uncapping tank and you manually slide the frames across the...

    Re: Bottomboard screened or solid

I agree neighbor. 26 out of 26 of my hives with SBB made it though the winter here although it was much colder than normal. I like the debris to fall through. And by looking through the hive I can...

Re: Splitting hive and adding new queen?

I would split a day ahead. Mostly to ensure I know which part of the split the queen is in...so I don't put the new caged queen in a queen right split. The bees seem to accept queens that have been...
  9. Re: oxalic acid vaporizer vs formic acid treatment for varroa

During a hive inspection of one of my hives I found the drone larvae to have a high mite count. The hives here were building fast with lots of brood so I decided to try Formic Pro versus doing a...

    Re: Queenless or not?

Been there before. I'll give it 2 to 3 tries with eggs from another hive...if no queen cells by then its time to re-queen, combine (have to be very careful), or dump depending on your situation. No...

Re: 2018 journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

Yes, I don't remember when the Dogwoods were so beautiful. It is hard to squeeze everything into Spring. Good Luck with the traps.

    Re: What is this? (pics)

I'd freeze it for 24 hours before reusing. Can't tell from the picture but wax moths can leave a spider web looking trail in the cells. Better safe than sorry.

Re: When to add another box?

Dawnizzi, what are is the configuration of your hive...is it a deep with a medium, two deeps? As mentioned above 70-80% is good rule of thumb for time to add another box. The bees generally move up...

Re: 2 traps out. 2 swarms in.

Florida Panhandle (Okaloosa County) boxed a swarm from one of my hives on afternoon of Feb 22.
  16. Re: Florida Panhandle - Pollen coming into hives, bees hitting red maples

Hived my first swarm this afternoon. Strong over wintered hive decided to split...was caught a little of guard, I thought we were behind last year. I'll be getting out my "insurance" swarm traps...

Boxed my first swarm this afternoon. One of my off property hives that I had left extra honey over winter decided to split...luckily it was spotted and I was able to box it.
  19. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

In the FL Dept of AG Beekeeper Compliance Agreement, it does state to "re-queen collected swarms."
  20. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

I actually also use all 8 frame boxes...but two 8 frame mediums for the basic brood box is about the same as a deep (they just seen to use all of it vs. leaving the outside frames unused.) As the...

That was what I was thinking. I want to make sure I get that new queen. Thanks
  22. Re: Single deeps in Florida (Tamp/St. Pete). Yes or no?

Yup, standard down here is single deep, and winter with a medium on top. Most of mine are actually all mediums, I winter with 3 mediums and no deep.

    OAV and Splits

I was blessed to have all 26 of my full hives make it through winter. (only lost a last minute nuc I threw together from a weak hive due to starvation). But I was going to up my mite treatment...
  24. Re: Florida Panhandle - Pollen coming into hives, bees hitting red maples

Got into 14 of my hives yesterday. Not a lot of drones yet...I would say they are at least a week behind last year. Did a lot of reversing boxes (I run almost all 8 frame mediums, very few deeps). ...
  25. Re: Florida Panhandle - Pollen coming into hives, bees hitting red maples

I always have a few hive swarms get away...you are almost close enough to snag some. The president of the local beekeepers association lives in Milligan/Holt. Again, good luck with the move.
