  1. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

I got about 80 lbs total from my 10+ hives this year, and I had to feed heavily in the fall. Who knows?

Next year, of course, will be so much better ...

Re: a honeycomb i left for now

I think you are on the right track. Let them recover, and see what happens for now.

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

Hey JW, it's been a while, how about an update? I assume it is in secondary now?

My batch (another thread) is aging now, waiting for Thanksgiving. I am hopeful it turned out well. I didn't do...

    Re: Wintering in Montana

Not quite as cold in Eastern WA, but I too chuckle when people are still talking about feeding. That ended weeks ago!
  5. Re: A series of interviews from commercial beekeepers

It is just a wierd video all-around.

Re: a honeycomb i left for now

Can't see the pictures yet, pending approval. But to answer your question about feeding, if they are going to get established in the hive, they will need nectar or feed. If there is nectar in...

    Re: Emergency Averted I think

It sounds to me that you have done exactly what you could / should have to this point. I think now you need to think about feeding. I would use 2:1 sugar syrup.

    More later, hopefully.

Re: I'm in it now i guess, Emergency?

Another thought, check Craigslist for people advertising "Bee removal." Give one or two of them a call, they may be able to offer local advice, or you may get lucky enough for one to volunteer to...

Re: I'm in it now i guess, Emergency?

Wow, you have your hands full, for a first time keeper. To be honest, based on what you have said, and what my imagination fills in, I'd says the chances of saving these bees are pretty bleak.

  11. Re: Mann Lake EZ-Fill vs. Rotary Table Filler - Ease of use for older child?

I have no advice to offer, but wanted to say that I wish you well in your endeavor. The change in your child will be worth every bit as much as any realized benefit to the homeless. Best to you.

Re: The right number of hives to keep it fun

As far as time spent - I spent far more time keeping my 2 hives the first year than I did this year with 10ish.

Until the mite treatments this fall, that is ...
  14. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Yeah, don't take the donuts to another State and sell them either ...
  15. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

You won't gain traction here, making apistan treatments is best left to the pros. It costs a lot for a reason.
  16. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

I learned not to buy colonies sight-unseen. Yes, I did that, bought 6 hives, for the value of the equipment they were in. Three were queenless, one was tiny, one was very testy.

    I learned that...

    Re: Urgent Varroa Mite Question

For a week, without a treatment in the hive, that would scare the bejeebers out of me. I have never used Apivar, but I am guessing that these drops several weeks later are not residual effects of...

Re: The right number of hives to keep it fun

I have 8 full colonies, and 3 nucs going into winter. Once I figured to mix syrup in (several) 5 gallon buckets with a paint mixer, life got a lot easier.

The biggest chore was OAV treating...

    Re: Lowest observed foraging temperature

I have seen a few flying days this week, sunny and in the 40's. I am pretty sure they were out at 44 one day.
  20. Re: Newbee here with question about plastic bottle prices.......

No advice regarding your question, but if you are at "break-even" at your level already, congratulations are in order. You are doing something right.

Re: When to add solid sugar feed

Near Spokane - I have mine in already. But I do it earlier than most, apparently. There were a couple of recent threads about this, search for "Mountain Camp."

Re: Bees filling mason jars with honey comb

Never seen them, other than on the 'net. I think non-keepers would fear that the comb is "dirty" if it has never been processed in any way by human hands. Yeah, I know, it is probably the other way...

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

There are different ways of doing things. I prefer more management, which I believe will result in more sucess in my goals.

But not in man-made hives, in their non-native environment, with...
