    Re: Colorado

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post, but I'm in Denver and am looking to sell a Maxant 3100P (and the leg kit) bought in 2017 and used for one honey harvest. I paid $850 and am asking...
  2. Re: Colorado Front Range - February, 2016 - Off to a roaring start

I know, this weather is crazy! My two hives made it through the winter okay. I put sugar cakes on them the beginning of January and added more a few weeks ago. The hives are going on their 3rd and...
  3. Re: Colorado Front Range - February, 2016 - Off to a roaring start

    Hello Coloradans!
Happy Spring! I was wondering when Denver people were thinking of putting on the supers. Would the first of April be too early? We have tree blossoms all over the place and I've...

Re: Wax moth damage in supers! What to do!

Hi Brad Bee, it was definitely Wax Moth! I picked out tons of cocoons and saw the actual larva tunneling through the combs...it was both gross and fascinating!

Re: For those of you who use Oxalic Acid..

I do one OAV treatment in December and three in March spaced out a week. After the supers are removed, I place a Mite Away Quick Strip (MAQS) between the two brood boxes. I know that you can do...

    Re: Wax moth damage!

Thanks so much for the advice! For the future, what do you recommend...thicker trash bags? Moth balls? I have to store them in an unheated sunroom. I guess it didn't get as cold as I thought. ...

Wax moth damage in supers! What to do!

I just did #1 treatment with OAV and thought I'd take a look at the stored supers (in air tight garbage bags...so I thought!:s) Yep, there were at least 3 of the 9 frames damaged in each of 3...

Re: Why did you start up beekeeping?

Daughter came home from college, took an entomology class, did a junior semester in Czech Republic in an area where they kept bees! She started the first hive, I added a second and as with all her...

Worker bees got stuck in queen excluder

When we went to take off the last honey super, we noticed there was brood in 4 of the frames. We put a queen excluder between the second deep and the super to keep her out and let the bees hatch. ...

Re: Preparing for Winter, a bit early?

I would at least do a mite count now with either a sugar roll or using a sticky bottom board. It would be good to know if mites are a factor in the winter loss, even if you don't plan on treating.

Re: Preparing for Winter, a bit early?

Do you treat for mites in the fall and again during the broodless period in the winter? Mites could be the downfall of a hive in the winter time!

Re: Preparing for Winter, a bit early?

For the past three years, here in Denver I've not wrapped or insulated the hives. They are backing a retaining wall, though and have trees to either side as wind breaks. I have two deeps and the...

Re: To remove or not to remove?

I have two hives in Denver configured in two deeps. We've been harvesting honey since the second summer from whatever honey supers we put on top (this year we did three on each hive). Around the...

Re: When does one put on honey supers

I placed my supers when I saw dandelions blooming around my yard in the spring! This year, that was April 9th. I checked around 15 days later and added another super when I saw that 70% had been...

    Re: Any Allergic Beekeepers?

I always get a lot of swelling, especially on the hand. It takes a good 5 days for everything to get back to normal. The itching usually starts on the third day and resolves on the 5th. Once, I...
  18. Re: Adding third super with only foundation. Will they draw it out now or ignore?

I've got two deeps for the brood and the supers are mediums...so no ability to mix and match, sadly! Good thought, though!
  19. Re: Adding third super with only foundation. Will they draw it out now or ignore?

Thanks! I don't think there is that much action at the moment. I'll just check on them in a few weeks!
  20. Adding third super with only foundation. Will they draw it out now or ignore?

I checked on the two hives today. I requeened them both 5/22 & 5/23. One was the remaining bees from a swarm from 4/23 that didn't requeen and the other had no brood/larva/eggs when I went to steal a...
  21. Queenless after swarm and 1 month. Question about where to put queen cage

Just did the inspection 1 month after swarm and they are queenless. I have two deeps and two honey supers on. The top deep is full of honey on the outsides and nectar in the middle. The lower deep...
  22. Re: Hive just swarmed, when do I check to see if the new queen got mated?

Thanks Frank! I'll do that tomorrow!
  23. Re: Hive just swarmed, when do I check to see if the new queen got mated?

Thanks so much for the bee math. Unfortunately, the swarm is located around 40 feet up a tall willow tree. Three beekeepers have turned down the offer to try a capture and I can't blame them. I'll...
  24. Hive just swarmed, when do I check to see if the new queen got mated?

I thought supering could help, but obviously not! I'm limited to one hive and have already called our local swarm guru to come and box them for someone else! I just need some help to know when I...
