    Re: Fall Feeding

The bottom boxes have little to no honey......just a little bit in some of the corners. It's mostly hatched out brood cells with a little bit of capped brood, some eggs, some larva on a few frames....

    Re: Fall Feeding

Last year I wintered over my single hive (at that time) with one deep that was about 75% full, mostly of syrup. I did feed patties starting in February though.

What if I feed 2:1 and they run out...

    Re: Buying an Extractor....

Yep, great info on this thread. I thought I would share my experience.......

After much research and re-reading of this thread, I ordered a cheap, 2 frame power extractor online. I figured, for...

    Re: Buying an Extractor....

Thanks again for all the comments.

Agreed, the extractor is a bit of a luxury. I know there are some who beekeep to supplement income, and that changes the game considerably. For me this is a...

    Re: Buying an Extractor....

Thanks. I think I will order the manual one and then add the motor in the Spring just to keep the cost down a bit.

Good idea on renting it out as a way to offset the cost!

    Buying an Extractor....

Morning. I am in the market for an extractor. I have three colonies now, and I have about 10 frames to harvest now. I am hoping for a decent Spring 2020 flow so I can get a bigger harvest. Ideally I...

    Re: Stores Question

    Thanks for the insight.

Yep, he told me FormicPro first, followed by Apivar. I stood in front of him with another new beekeeper late last summer, that's what he said, so that's what I did last...

    Stores Question

Lots of similar questions on the first page, but I wanted to ask some advise for my situation. I have three colonies here in central New Jersey. All three are queenright. All three were two deeps and...
  12. Re: Why would bees be doing this? See picture

I'm in my second year, and I find the exact same thing. My theory is it has to do with humidity and barometric pressure as well, not just temperature, but what do I know? I'm not a bee! :)

Re: Fall Flow in Central NJ

Super helpful information, thank you. I am going to take a look at all three hives this weekend and make an assessment. I live on a small farm, and there is another farm behind mine, together roughly...

    Fall Flow in Central NJ

I have three colonies which are all doing well. We have some goldenrod in bloom here in central New Jersey, but it seems to me that it's not a great year for goldenrod for whatever reason.

    I want...

    Re: Second Hive Body???

I'm only halfway thru my second year, but yes, that's the general idea. Let them fill up the first box with brood and some stores, and then add a second box.

    Good luck with your beekeeping...

    Central NJ Pollen Source Now?

My hives are near my garden, and at least every other day I just sit and watch them for 10 minutes. Recently there has not been a lot of pollen coming into the hives......until just recently. They...

Just an update - I was able to find a mated queen which I am picking up today. Onward and upward!
  18. Anywhere to get a Mated Queen in Central NJ?

I did a good hive inspection yesterday. Hives 1 and 2 are solid. Both are two deeps and a honey super. The top deep in both are pretty much full of honey which I will leave for them for the winter....

    Re: Found 2 queen cells

Ha, funny. Over the past few years I have realized the need for reading glasses. It's a real PIA to see thru a veil with them :lookout:

I'm only in my second year, but I just went thru something very similar in one of my hives. I thought they were swarm cells, but wonder now if they were supersede cells. Check out this thread,...

Re: Swarm cells - a little help please?

Thanks squarepeg, I will do just that. There was plenty of activity over the weekend with bees going in and out of the hive, so hopefully they have figured it out. I'll check back in a few weeks.

Re: Swarm cells - a little help please?

Well I went into the hive on Wednesday afternoon. In the top box where I saw the queen cells last weekend I found what I think is a hatched out cell. The other queen cells appear to be gone. There...
