  1. Re: OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

Thx a million, Ark; I don't know where that 135 came from (could've been a disaster maybe).

I think our dearth is supposed to end pretty soon (once the goldenrod starts to bloom), so .... best to...
  2. Re: OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

OK, Coal -- as near as I can tell (from Randy's chart), I would use 45 g OA crystals in 1 L of 1:1 sugar syrup. Does anybody take issue with that?

Re: How close can I set my hives

FWIW .... I read an article in a European mag the other day, comparing hives perched on even stands, close to each other, and all painted white versus hives kept a # of feet apart, of different...
  4. OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

Can anybody, off the top of their head, tell me the correct # of grams/unit vol of wood bleach to use for a OA dribble? Seems like it was 135 g for a L -- last time I used the commercial stuff.

  5. best way to apply Bt-k to frames (that could have moth-maggot potential)?

I had lots of good feedback to my earlier post re: eliminating moths/maggots. That said ....

How do I treat the frames? I have manually-operated sprayers, so .... just spray the solution on each...

Re: Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

I do freeze - but for 2-4 weeks! As some old-timers have told me, over and over, cold doesn't seem to bother moth eggs at all. May kill the adults, but .... it's a chicken-egg thing, I guess.

Re: Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

Gross! The "eggs" make the little monsters even more unappealing to me.

I have some Bt-k. Might be time to use it!

    Thx, all, for the data!

Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

I'm having issues with moths on my old frames (I keep in the house) -- I washed/scraped them (all have plastic foundation) in fall, and have kept them in the air inside (not in the usual plastic...
  9. hived swarm robbed out; should I have not fed them?

I hived a tiny swarm several weeks ago (using 2 nucs put together). Once I moved them to the formal hive stand, I placed a Boardman feeder into the top nuc. Figured the bees needed all the help they...
  10. Re: Tried-and-true tactics for helping a tiny hived swarm survive?

It's appreciated, guys. I'll give 'em some time and see what happens, then take it from there.....

  11. Tried-and-true tactics for helping a tiny hived swarm survive?

While I'm on the Forum ....

I persuaded a small swarm (2 handsful, maybe) to move into a bait box last week. They're coming/going and toting pollen (even at this late date; we're well into a...

Re: one-two punch using Apivar and OA dribble?

Much obliged, troops, for all the input. The takeaway from these, I guess, is to just do what I usually do -- July Tx with 1 agent, Oct. Tx with another, and so-on in Feb-March .....

one-two punch using Apivar and OA dribble?

Maybe an academic question, but ..... would there be a downside to using Apivar strips and an OA dribble for mites in a hive at around the same time? I mean, if I have the strips in a hive, why not...
  14. Re: process for selling honey locally (sall-scale) ....?

Thx, guys; I figured there'd be the usual regs involved. I'll ask some local beeks too (maybe; I'm not sure if they like the idea of competition -- although where mine would sell wouldn't be in the...
  15. process for selling honey locally (sall-scale) ....?

Never thought I'd reach this point (after 3 years of, basically, no real honey harvest), but ..... can anybody give me an idea of what's involved in selling honey? A local person told me she'd be...
  16. Re: OK to put harvested comb back into a hive (for brood or honey, etc)?

OK JW; sounds reasonable. I only have 5 more medium frames to get the goods from, so .... next time. with greater #s of frames, I'll dredge up an extractor from somewhere. Thx much ....

    Mitch
  17. Re: OK to put harvested comb back into a hive (for brood or honey, etc)?

Howdy, JW; OK -- I can borrow an extractor from the local association if I really wanna, or an assoc. pal would loan me hers. But .... after using one last month (borrowed, with the friend guiding me...
  18. OK to put harvested comb back into a hive (for brood or honey, etc)?

I'm harvesting honey this weekend, and had to scrape/tear the comb to get it to flow -- yep, I'm using the gravity method of "extraction".

That said ..... once the honey's [mostly] out of the...
  19. any correlation between bearding and swarm-possibility?

I have a hive (1 deep, 3 mediums) with a decent population, but not anything eye-popping; plenty of space in the top medium for work. This is the 3rd year for the colony.

    Still .... this hive...
  20. post-swarm hive configuration is viable or untenable?

I have a hive that swarmed 2X this spring (maybe even a 3rd!), but it still seems functional.

It had a deep and 3 mediums at swarm-time. The top medium seemed to be filling with honeycomb,...
  21. Re: any ideas re: what to do after swarming (and I see an open queen cup)?

Thx, guys; I'd check for eggs but .... wouldn't see 'em. My visual acuity ain't so terrific, and -- to tell the truth -- in 4 years with bees, I don't think I've ever seen a bee egg (!). Tiny larvae,...
  22. any ideas re: what to do after swarming (and I see an open queen cup)?

My super-strong hive swarmed 3 weeks ago. Huge swarm, and it left w/o moving into 1 of my bait hives. :(

I've since reduced it from 2 deeps and a medium to just 1 deep. Checked it yest -- saw a...

    Re: manuka tree honey

Outstanding, Mandan; OT and I have corresponded about the manuka. I finally have my plant (after 1 misadventure involving a dead little twig from England), and love it. We'll see if The Girls ever...

best medium for an SHB trap?

Re: the flat, reusable, black-plastic traps ......

I've used these some in the past, with the roach killer (I know the arguments against it) and they were kinda effective.

    This time, though, no...
  25. Re: OA dribble method: how can I calculate how much to use from wood bleach?!
