+1 I lost a huge swarm this year due to the trap box not being big enough.

Re: swarm in trap lost to hive beetles. ???

I moved them into a ten frame box this past Saturday. They have easily doubled in size in both bees and comb. I don't like to do it unless absolutely necessary, but I've been feeding them for the...

Re: swarm in trap lost to hive beetles. ???

Hived them yesterday morning. They were a little smaller than a package of bees. They had drawn 6 frames of about a saucer sized comb. They had capped honey and open pollen but I didn't see any brood...

Re: swarm in trap lost to hive beetles. ???

Thanks Litsinger. Judging by the amount of bee traffic, it looks to be a good sized swarm. I'll know for sure in a few days. Thankfully I don't have to move this trap very far and can carry it to the...

Re: swarm in trap lost to hive beetles. ???

I hadn't thought about something like that but it's good thinking. I'm definitely going to have to try something if the beetles are bad enough to take over a smaller swarm trap catch before you can...

swarm in trap lost to hive beetles. ???

I caught a swarm in a trap 2 weeks ago. I waited one week and brought them home. When I opened the trap box and started putting them in the hive box, I saw hive beetles everywhere and there was a...

Checked traps yesterday and found another swarm catch. Last check before then was on Monday, no action at all.

Re: Swarm came and then left my trap ??

Thanks guys. I'm going to leave it as is until the end of July so maybe an after-swarm or another colony will find it too. One thing I know for sure, next year a bigger box will be at this location!...

Swarm came and then left my trap ??

A couple of questions for the veteran swarm trappers on here: First a little info. I have a swarm trap that I can watch closely everyday. This trap has 9 empty foundationless frames baited with LGO...

    Re: Kentucky

Caught a very nice 6lb+ swarm in a swarm trap today. Have been seeing heavy scouting activity at this trap daily for the last 12 days. 11:30am
  14. Re: How Many of you have successfully kept TF from package bees?

Had some takers today! My first swarm catch! Had about 40 or so scouts last night just before a storm. This morning had scouts again early. At noon I saw about 40 or 50 bees nasanov fanning on the...

    Re: Kentucky

First swarm catch! Moved into a bait hive this morning 6-14-17, not sure of swarm size. Will know in few days 11:00 am 40033 Marion County.
  16. Re: How Many of you have successfully kept TF from package bees?

Thanks, that sounds like good advice. Hopefully sometime in the near future I'll get the chance to do cut-outs myself.
  17. Re: How Many of you have successfully kept TF from package bees?

This is exactly what has happened to me 2 years in a row. I started with one package the first time and me being dumb and not knowing any better thought that they just weren't a strong enough colony,...

Re: Hive design for Seeley's Darwinian Beekeeping

Hello, new guy around here. Been a long time lurker. Andrew, you may want to research the Layens hive. It is a one box horizontal hive with really thick walls and deep frames. Just something I have...
