Re: Does anybody reverse/flip bottom boards?

@JohnHill: I have some scrap PVC that I am going to make into bottom boards. I decided to go with 3/4 entrance and rout down the middle-ish of the 1x 1-3/4" scraps I have by ripping a 1x4" for the...

Re: Resources on Nectar Flow Timing?

It won't help you now, but if you start keeping a journal yourself, it will be invaluable in coming years. J

    Re: 18% ABV Sweet mead

I only tried mead once and didn't care for it. But if you can get it dry and more like brandy, I would give it a go. J

Re: Anyone Have Experience With MDO Sheathing?

Thanks Jim. Any suggestions for sealing the edges before banding? Perhaps epoxy? I am familiar with PVC expansion and contraction issues. Rich, I prefer real wood too and have tried to keep my 1790...
  10. Re: Is it important to heat frames before extraction?

Not illegal here, but not the best practice for sure. OP didn't say how far the apiary is from his heating room, so it could be his bees or neighborhood bees cleaning the frames JW. I put my wet...

    Sticky: Re: 2019 efb threads

A good reason not to share honey among the hives or if you do, not to share it between apiaries. Also, feed sugar water to your caged/banked queens, not honey. Something I did before I knew better. J
  12. Re: Is it important to heat frames before extraction?

Hi Fuzz. I am a little unclear about "I'm fine with potentially not extracting as much honey, because I'll be giving it all back to the bees anyway". I assume you are not actually giving all the...

Re: Anyone Have Experience With MDO Sheathing?

Toledo is a little far, so I will have to bite the bullet and buy full sheets. Thanks for the info. Think I will go for the MDO. J

Re: Using Dogs To Detect Bee Diseases?

Interesting. I would have liked to see Max the wonder dog working. Probably a good thing he wasn't very good at detecting drugs. Beekeepers got to be high on something. J

    Re: Mowing rows

All mowers I have had in the last 20 years anyway offer a mulching blade kit which consists of the blades and a plug you stick in the discharge. Just take the plug out if you don't want to mulch your...

Re: Anyone Have Experience With MDO Sheathing?

Yes, its very expensive. Where do you get it in a close out bin? HD? What do you do with the edges? Thanks. J

Using Dogs To Detect Bee Diseases?

Dogs can be trained to smell diseases in humans and plants. I wonder if any are being used in commercial operations to detect EFB, AFB, etc. It would certainly be fast and maybe more accurate than...

Anyone Have Experience With MDO Sheathing?

MDO= Medium Density Overlay, AKA "Sign board". Hi All. I confess that my question is about a home project, not beekeeping. Hope I am not stretching the rules too much and maybe it will give me an...

Re: Should I go with Saskatraz packages

Local mutts from a reputable queen seller will overwinter just fine provided they are healthy which means you are doing something about mites. You probably should not take any advice from your friend...

That's quite a career in beekeeping. Great looking boxes. Is that lumber from PG&E? If most of it is that clear, you scored! White pine? J

Re: Getting back in, in Northern California.

Welcome! Read up on mites and EFB. I have a friend who was a beek back in the day and he is shocked at what you have to do these days. He said he didn't do anything except harvest honey. Best of luck...
