Re: You might be a beekeeper if...

Yea. I enjoyed the last thread like this!

marked down exterior paint gets you giddy.

you have lost count of how many times you've been stung and you don't care.

    a smoker isn't referring to...

    Re: forced brood break

Looks like we have similar situations. I stopped buying foundation a couple of years ago, but it isn't too hard to cut out drone comb. I may give that a try this year. Yes, finding all the queens...

    Re: Painting Supers

Gino45 said it best. Regional differences need to be taken into consideration. If the humidity here isn't in the 90s, I don't know what to do. I laughed when my sister-in-law said she was...

    Re: queen balled

Good question. I don't know if they requeened already or if she was one of the few I didn't mark last year. I didn't write down if there were eggs. I know there were capped brood. I have several...

    queen balled

I marked a queen with a new Painters nontoxic pen today. Her hive is tiny and just starting to build. Four+ hours later we find her balled, four hive down, on the landing pad of one of the largest...

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

Marked a queen late morning, early afternoon. 4:15, we went back out to put in some pollen pattie and found her balled at the entrance of a much bigger hive, four boxes down. Her hive was the...

    Re: forced brood break

Keep in mind that I am in zone 9a. Bees are flying throughout the winter.

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

I'm not happy with how some of them are starting the season. This has been a mild winter. Not sure how much is due to that or other factors. I'm nearly positive I've lost ALL the fat bee man...

    Re: forced brood break

Beekeeping is regional. A September brood break is not the same as those expressing concern. You are in the northern regions. We don't even go a week during the winter without flying days most...

    Re: nuc sales agreement

The inspector here is only required to check a small %. Nice guy and wasn't upset that I asked him to use my tools.

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

    JW, Thank you

Update: We went to split a double nuc that we saw packed Saturday and 90% of the bees were dead at the bottom. It looks like they starved. Massive pile of dead bees. Heart...

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

Yes, a bad cold snap to kill buds could be an issue. It has been a mild winter, but drones show early enough here for splits to be made and have laying queens by the end of February many years. ...

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

The season has officially begun. After multiple rain spoiled scheduled attempts to check the hives, we finally got a look. Temp today- 57F. Down to 11 hives. Several are strong enough to add a...

    Re: Richinbama 2018-2019 beekeeping quest

JW, your goals sound similar to mine. I hope to go into next winter with 20 hives. I don't think I can maintain 20 production right now, but will probably shoot for 10 with the others being used...

I'm late getting back to answer. Rich, how about I take you up on that after the coming flow?
Down to 14, but staying steady after the fast loss of fat bee man queen's hives. Good riddance of bad...

Checkerboarding up kept my strongest from swarming. You have to keep on top of them though. I was using empty frames since I didn't have extra comb.

Topped out at 20, down to 14. The weather took a couple out due to starvation. The others appear to the from the queens I bought from Fat Bee Man/ Dixie Bees that crashed from varroa. My locals...

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

That is a fast sell. How did you advertise? Did you sell it by the gallon? Sounds like you are in a good place to have a booming spring this coming year. I'm still using my manual two framer. I...

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

My other hives from local queens and some hygienics I bought two years ago are doing well. Biggest problem with them is the goldenrod coming in a month late. How many hives are you at atm?

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

Re: 2018/19 Journal NW Florida Gulf Coast

I've been way too busy since school started back up. We managed to get up to 20, but have lost a few since then. I broke down and did an oav treatment. The queens that I received from Fat Bee Man...

    Re: oa dribble freqency

What mix did you use? Could it have been that the treatment came to late?

I'm looking to use the mix listed on scientific beekeeping.
