    Re: Drone congregation area

If she comes back poorly mated, she will lay drones. The bees might kill her after a while if she manages to lay a fertilized egg and they will try to turn it into a queen. Many times though, they...
  2. Re: I split hives. They rebounded. What should I be looking for now?

If they are swarming all of the time then they might not have enough space, they sounds like good bees, you should have supers on them and undrawn foundation in the hive so that everyone has...

    Re: Porcelain Berry

There are other sources of nectar blooming of course, try it this year and see what happens, if it doesn't taste as sweet, make Meade or something out of it!

    Re: Drone congregation area

Its always worth it to try, queens can fly pretty far for drones. you never know where bees may be hiding around your apiary!
  5. Re: Why is my honey settling at the bottom of the jar?

Without a picture, it sounds like, to me, that it may just be crystals forming and settling out.

Re: Has anyone ever tried this ....?

Queen bees mate while flying as fast they can. They need a lot of space and a lot of drones in order to successfully mate.
  7. Re: 16 grafted, 7 accepted, 3 emerged, virgin introduction rejectedů

Those nurse bees still have loyalties to the old queen that they were with. Introducing a live queen is risky in almost any situation, but putting the nurse bees in with a 14-15 day old queen cell...

Re: Beetle Blocker Shim: What do you think?

You may just be experiencing a bad year for SHB, perhaps they are simply more this year than last year and some are bound to get through eventually. I had an extraordinarily abnormal warm winter...

    Re: Ventilation on Nuc hive?

I have humidity problems in my area so ventilation is a must for me. All hives, including nucs get ventilation (vent boards/boxes) in my yard, keeps the mold and winter losses way down.

Re: Feisty bees are more hygienic?

Africanized bees are the feistiest of the bunch and they don't have any varroa problems. But I think that has more to do with their swarm habit than hygenic behavior. Russians are some of the most...

Re: Bumble Bees in raised bed

BB are notoriously difficult to move and manage due to their ultimately temporary nature. The colony you found will not overwinter. They really like burrowing, so the usual recommendation is an...

Re: Whelp, I now have 3 hives :waiting:

You always think you're done with woodenware until a hive raises a bunch of queen cells on half a dozen frames.....

    Re: Entrance reducer

Many beekeepers use the smallest entrance all year and never remove it. The bees somehow stay coordinated! If you are just starting a colony, then they are getting most of their energy from the...
  14. Re: Harvesting - Hoping to get some bees capping and some moving...

If the flow is over, then they probably won't cap it. About all you could do is leave the nectar frames in the hives and hope that maybe some last minute rain will bump the flow enough for them to...

    Re: Bee with Red thorax???

Totally looks like humming bird feed to me. I can't even have my humming bird feeder anymore since the bees just eat it all and fight the birds.

    Re: First bee removal

Hopefully you won't encounter any surprise electrical wires when doing a cut out! Best of luck, I hope you get them all
  17. Re: "Extractor Dancing" - FYI, a solution - maybe

I find that once the majority of the honey is out, I can max out the extractor with relative stability to really dry them out.

Re: Hardware cloth and hive beetles

The SHBs can't go up the screen on a screened bottom board (unless you made it yourself with 1/8+ inch wire), but the larva can squeeze through it, drop on the ground, and pupate. If you are worried...
  19. Re: How many queens can be in a single swarm?

So would this be considered an afterswarm? Those queen would be virgins right?

Re: How long before hive goes laying worker?

I just had a hive with TONS of laying workers 28 days after they went queenless and the queen did not return on her mating flight. Seemed a bit fast to me.

Re: Flooded Hive - Honey Question

As someone who experienced many Florida floods, you do not want to take any chances with flood waters, there is some real nasty, disgusting stuff that can be in there, some of it can permeate wax. I...

    Re: candy board question

I can usually break the old candy out and soak it is a bucket of water to turn it into syrup the next day. Helps to put a lid on it to keep the ants out!

    Re: Cut Comb

You can get a lot for local comb honey. I mean, they sell 5.6 oz. comb honey at Whole Foods for $20.
  24. Re: Most efficient way to make large amounts of nucleus colonies

Resource hives are always nice. Michael Palmer uses resource nucs to great success, he has a lot of talks on youtube about queen breeding and his method of getting swarm cells whenever he wants.

Re: New design of a honey extractor.

It would be interesting to see if the taste between traditional extracted honey tastes different than crush and strain (doesn't make the honey into droplets).
