Re: If bees were paid the minimum wage

Have you never wondered WHY, with all the pheromone traps, baited hives seeded with honey are left by the wayside and bees will opt for that sturdy branch before entering the box trap once again....

Re: If bees were paid the minimum wage

Child labor laws would only apply for the nurse and housekeeping bees. Moreover only a limited time of adulthood is done foraging. Furthermore, no social security pensions are offered when these...

Re: Captured Swarm - When to Check

Usually I give them a week. Just as with humans, they may not like their housing decision made for them and will be looking for any reason to leave. Put in a pollen patty and feed some sugar water to...

    Re: "stinky" honey?

    Re: d) Getting bees

    Hi everyone.
Will certainly agree that nucs are the way to go, as package bees often do not even have many nurse bees to care for the queen. That brings me to a few points and a question?

    Re: Giving queens names

I hope none are named after the Chicago Cubs. One does want a hive that can hit out of the ball club.
  7. Re: Why haven't more beekeepers been inspired by The Sustainable Apiary

Think there still are some older and YOUNGER gardeners practicing old fashioned beekeeping.
Just added these two links to my own website.

    Re: Giving queens names

LOVE IT! Boudicea or Beedicea would be a good names to start with, though the Celt part would be Italianized or come from the Caucasus. This year I may add some VHS Italian Queens to my Apiary.
  9. Re: Just for fun: Frivolous and sundry Questions about bees.

Been a beekeeper since the 80's. Learned from Ormand Aebi. Am quite long toothed myself by now.

all a gamble is a good name for it and has worked for 100,000 years. Perhaps true, but for the...
  10. Re: Just for fun: Frivolous and sundry Questions about bees.

As for that task of thinning down the fat old queen and gambling on that girl to repopulate a new working home does not make much sense. Certainly not to the point of emptying out the nest with 50...

  13. Re: Hive Assembly Question? What Type of glue works and or what can be substituted ?

I use tightbond for the wood assembly, but my question is about queen excluders, metal. What glue works best and is not fuming, or harmful to the bees, but works on metal?
I am adding strips of 5...

Would just reiterate what many before said. I too bought an 'affordable' hand crank one from eBay. Not an issue about the crank vs. electric. But do check out the LEGS of all these made in China...

Re: Brood Pattern: Spotty vs. Hygienic
