    Re: A Small Victory

If you keep doing things the same way and expect different results, you are certain to be disappointed.
  2. Re: Expectations vs reality -- a personal video

Thanks for the compliments. As I said at the beginning of the talk, the topic was a bit beyond my comfort zone but with a little cogitation I realized how important a topic it is.
  3. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

Thanks to all for the compliments.
One comment on YouTube complained that the position of the camera left me blocking the screen. After the talk I did a quick review of the recording and also...
  4. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

Thank you. Sadly, I needed my phone for use as a timer. I actually had put it on silent but had an alarm set. Evidently I needed to do a separate silence setting for the alarm. Go figure.
  5. Re: Expectations vs reality -- a personal video

I hate trying to listen to videos with poor audio. I usually immediately close them and move on. I work at making mine listenable. I don't always succeed.
And I am not a fan of music as a...
  6. Expectations vs reality -- a personal video

I did a talk recently for a local bee club. The topic was Expectations vs Reality the First Two Years.

    Re: Helping small winter cluster

Any idea why the cluster is so small?
  9. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

Thanks. It is my hope to post a video. As a one shot thing though, they don't always work out. I plan to record it and will see if it is fit to edit and post on youtube.
  10. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

The talk is scheduled for next Thursday, Feb 20. I worked on the powerpoint a bit today. Mites are definitely one of the topics. I only have about 45 minutes and there are a number of things I need...

    Re: Applied Apivar today

I've seen a thousand mites drop in the first week.
  12. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

Would you allow me to use this? I promise to give you credit.
  13. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

A sincere thank you to everyone who has replied.
There are a number of thoughts in your posts that I hadn’t considered that will be incorporated in my talk. Some of your ideas will allow me to...
  14. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

I might *borrow* Randy Oliver’s list.

I believe that I indirectly address this. When I advise new beekeepers to seek a successful beekeeping mentor who keeps bees with a philosophical method that...
  15. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

My vision for this talk isn’t about the nuts and bolts of beekeeping. Many of these folks will have just completed a short course. For me to come along and give them another 45 minutes of ‘how to’...
  16. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

We're on a similar thought plane. My first slide so far is 'Harden Your Heart'. I plan to speak to being prepared to accept losses without losing heart.
  17. Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

I have been invited to do a talk at a nearby bee club later this month. They had a beekeeping short course in January and had about 90 attendees. Each year, following their short course they get a...

    Re: Acorn frames

Iíve made the same argument myself. Why would anyone produce a wax coated piece of foundation that they knew was incompletely coated? Obviously, the answer is money.
I used to assemble all of my...

    Re: Hive swarmed

Even in Australia an abandoned hive full of wax moth larvae doesn't indicate a swarm.
On the other hand, since Australia isn't supposed to have mites....a mite crash probably isn't the answer...

    Re: Acorn frames

In my case, I only have Pierco. I am hoping to do a comparison of the triple waxed Pierco vs standard coated Mann Lake vs wax foundation. I have 300 sheets of the Pierco, about 100 wax and about 300...

    Re: Acorn frames

I ordered some triple waxed foundation from Pierco. On the day I wanted to order, for some reason the Acorn website wouldn't load and I ended up ordering from Pierco. $1.52/sheet when ordering a...

Re: How to keep honeybees alive and thriving.

I enjoyed your splitting video from last June.
I, too, believe that the only way to make a split it to make it strong. Regardless of time of season, they must be able to defend against robbers,...

Re: Treat mites all the time?

Regardless of where your bees come from….except Australia or Pitcairn Island….they will have mites. The only treatment that might eliminate all the mites from your hive would also likely kill all of...

    Re: first dead-out

I understand the potential for confusion. On the other hand, there are any numbers of homebrew delivery methods for Amitraz. And thymol, in addition to homebrew, can be delivered by Apilife Var as...
