Re: Can I feed my bees Sorghum Syrup?

You could ship a few jugs to me! Love me some sorghum molasses!

    Re: Is backyard beehive feasible?

This is my situation. So far no problems. My side fences are chain link so the neighbors can see into my back yard and I have had no complaints in 4 years. I told my back neighbor I had bees, and he...

Re: 2020 How was your winter?

Supposed to get to minus 7F the next day or two, and up into the 40s next week.

Re: How close to Row Crops can I be

Depends a bit on what crops. Cotton, for example is sprayed a lot more than corn or beans. I keep bees near corn and bean fields and have had no problems. Personally, I wouldn't worry if they were 20...

Sticky: Re: treatment free member listing

Well Greg, if my current bees survive another year or two TF, you are welcome to try some. Not far away at all.
  6. Re: Evaluate your beekeeping location - using beescape.

I got very different numbers from locations not far apart. Apparently, my back yard is a very poor place for bees! Too close to cropland so high insecticide scores, and low floral scores. The program...
  7. Re: Topic: Expectations and Realities of Beekeeping (The First Two Years)

Be ready for predictable events. Varroa, swarming, needing more equipment, winter, queen loss. All these things WILL come to pass. Have an idea what your response will be before they happen.

    I was...
  8. Re: Minus agriculltural chems. / Increase in food price question

I used to put plastic pop bottles over my corn ears. The only way to keep the crows off! Might be a bit inefficient in a farm field...!

Sticky: Re: Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

In Japan I saw many fruits bagged with paper bags. The rain didn't seem to cause any problems.
  10. Sticky: Re: A shift in message? The case for IPM instead of bond as the path to TF for new ba

The way he describes his breeding stock it sounds like he has a very narrow genetic base. Not good when looking for new traits.
  11. Sticky: Re: A shift in message? The case for IPM instead of bond as the path to TF for new ba

    He talks about resistance here:

Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

Some political groups collect and re-use the signs. I don't want to accidentally steal property. Around here some rural corners however will have signs left over a long time. I call those fair game.

Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

I am anticipating a lot of political sign availability this year! :-)
My plan is to wait until a few weeks after the election. I figure if the people who place the signs can't be bothered to clean...
  14. Re: Minus agriculltural chems. / Increase in food price question

    https://mercaris.com/posts/organic-and-non-gmo-corn-prices

Organic corn is roughly 3 times the cost of non-organic. I grow a lot of organic veggies, corn, melons etc. Just yesterday my wife...

Re: So, what did you scrounge today? Braggin encouraged

2 4'X8'X1" sheets of particleboard. There was a lot more but bigger sheets that wouldn't fit in the minivan. Sad. I hope someone gets to them before they get wet. I will probably cut some up for hive...

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

Just my opinion, and a not very experienced one, but I wonder if that's just where we are and will stay? Treatment free is going to face higher losses than an experienced treating beekeeper will. The...

Re: Is it common for bees to get into your home?

When I was a kid we had a swarm move into the wall of our kitchen. It was quite exciting. A neighbor beekeeper trapped it out. I wish I knew the details but all I remember is the box he put in our...
  18. Re: We had it figured out until we didn't have it figured out

I have not really had a problem with comb. I use a lot of medium frames in deep equipment, because I bought too many medium frames and not enough deeps! So I started just sticking them into the deep...

Sticky: Re: TF in a world that treats

This is what I did last summer and it worked very well to make a handful of splits off one swarm that came in May. By July they were strong so I took the queen and some capped brood into a nuc and...

Re: Swarm attracted to a house every year

I have a similar situation. My brother's elderly house is a yearly beacon. It had bees last year and probably still does. I am hoping to trap them out this year. Then I plan to fill any gaps I see...

Re: 2020 How was your winter?

Yep. Got snow in May last spring. 4 inches. Or was that late April? No grapes, peaches, plums and very few apples last year due to the late snow.

It was almost 50 degrees here and the bees were...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Just over freezing here. A few bees are out and flying around, but not making it back in reliably as they chill. Supposed to have a 40-degree day next week. I keep waiting for real winter to hit, but...

    Re: Translation & Authenticity ?

I like terms like 'factory-girl'. The occasional use of these terms would make the document more interesting to read. Overuse quickly becomes annoying!
