    Re: Help needed with Bee's

Yup, I’m betting on them being mostly YJ’s too, I would suggest a exterminator or a beekeeper come and identify the actors and what is going on. If it is bees, maybe there’s a feral hive nearby that...

    Re: light hive fix?

Adding frames of brood would mean one would have to add bees to cover them also, my mentor always cautioned against that as it’s upsetting the balance of the donor hive when they’re building up in...
  3. Re: When to remove entrance reducer with variable temps

I wouldn’t worry about the temps, the bees’ll be above the entrance and be fairly out of the cold air. The main thing is, is the hive strong enough to defend it on full open. Maybe can you adjust it...

Sticky: Re: Going to use OTS

The artificial swarm in the spring won’t get the brood break, Mel always said to use them for honey production and count of them being a possible loss in the fall. I shied away from that because of...

Sticky: Re: Going to use OTS

This wil be my 8th season using OTS. Great for increases, honey production and as far as I’m concerned far simpler than grafting as long as you don’t want to mass produce queens. The only thing that...

Re: What do do with chalk brood frames

I had a case of CB some years ago, with requeening it went away and I disposed of no equipment. It bounced back briefly in the next spring only to disappear for good.
I would guess if one were to...

Re: Found 2 queens on one comb

Ya, let nature take it’s course. Most likely it’s a supercedure, if there was one that mistakenly lit it that hive she’d be quickly dispatched.

  19. Re: ID of the creepy powder on my hive's inner cover?

Ya, some mold has set up, it’s a winter thing. Put a couple pennies on the front corners under the inner cover till the weather warms up and the bees can resume their housekeeping duties.

    Re: Starvation?

Yup, you got it. That’s the way my ole mentor bud does it right away in the beginning of winter and has done it that way for years. Normal “mountain camp” feeding is a feeder ring, newspaper and...

    Re: Starvation?

It’s possible they’ve chimneyed, where they run thru a couple frames of stores and ended up at the top, or they started brooding up early and ran thru the stores. Either way, it’s not a good sign for...

Far be it for me to give advice being a knuckle dragger on the subject. But my first thought would a glossary solve the dilemma?

Re: Bee grooming at the hive entrance

I’ve seen that activity before and always took it as the guard bees doing their thing. As in “you don’t have the right smell, you sure you belong here?”
