Re: Wintering with a top bar

TBH and horizontal hives are not any better or worse than traditional hives for the bees to keep warm. There are arguments to be made on both sides. My horizontal hives overwinter just fine. When...

    Re: Horizontal deep hives

I don't run super deeps like you. I do run horizontal hives with normal deep frames. This would be my third year with them. So far really no issues.

  3. Re: Can I get any honey to harvest with first yr nucs

Maybe. I would focus getting them through the winter and learn as much as I could from them the first year.

    Re: Broken Honeycomb

I personally would not have put it back in the hive as it won't stay upright in the frame. I may have crushed and strained the comb and fed back to them later or just taken the comb for my own...

Re: how long to grow to 300 a month profit

You still need to learn about bees. Probably take you 5 years to profit $300 a month. Probably take take longer.

Re: How late have you done a divide?

I've split as late as the second week of July. You just need to feed them good.

Re: The Truth About Wintering Bees?

I guess it depends on your goal. You can absolutely split that hive and have it overwinter fine. If you want honey from them, then you could just put them in a larger TBH. Either way is fine

    Re: Swarm Mood

I've run across some cranky swarms. Seems to me the longer they are hanging the crankier they get.

    Swarm while on break!

During lunch today a swarm landed in a tree right outside the break room. It took a few shakes, but ultimately got them all in a nuc. Needless to say there were many, many interested onlookers. ...

    Re: Swarm Season Southwestern Indiana

My first swarm was collected on Mothers Day. The next year my established hives swarmed the weekend before Mothers Day. Start your swarm prevention before then. As soon as I begin to see drones...

Re: bee tree made it through another winter.

Same here. The bee tree I've been watching has been there at least 5 years. I've been able to catch a swarm from them once. This year I have a bait hive close by. Hopefully they find it.

Re: Where to buy Top Bar Frames

As stated already, find a friend with a table saw that can make them for you. If you have no luck finding someone, then PM me. $2 a bar plus shipping. I used to sell custom made bars on ebay, but...

    Re: Spraying for mosquito

In my city all I have to do is contact the health dept and ask them to not spray on my street due to my hives.
  16. Re: Fundamentals of beekeeping: Cost to get started

Need to add shipping costs to the price of the hive set up as well.

Re: My kids helping with bees......

    Keep it going Dad.

My youngest was helping me the other day and got his first sting. Many tears, but after that he said he would continue with the bees.

So I am thinking I will fashion a bee escape between the comb section and the frame section and after the bee numbers are down in the comb section I will cut it out, harvest any honey or rubber band...

    Mistake made, possible solutions?

Curious to see what you all think I should do after making this mistake.

Re: Vertical sided TB hive question

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. They will keep building comb as long as there is a good flow on. If you think the flow will end, then I would be more inclined to add the bars a bit inside...

Re: Vertical sided TB hive question

Ditto. I added a few bars/frames to my TBH and Long Lang to prevent swarming. Worked like a charm. The 1 Long Lang that I didn't open up the brood nest swarmed.

    Re: Observations on Spring Management

What do you mean by swarm cells? Were they just cups or was there eggs/larva in them? If they were empty cups, it doesn't mean they are in swarm mode.
