    Re: BetterComb Experience, Anyone?

Frederick Dunn is trying this product out on a late-collected swarm this season. He will post updates, but I find it encouraging that the swarm immediately began...

    Awesome!
  3. Re: Are TF BeeKeepers Stimulating Colonies to Apply Propolis Envelopes in Hives?

Thank you falc for the info, I'm also fascinated with this subject, and am conducting my own experiments in each hive to see what type of roughed up surface they coat with the most propolis. Today,...

[QUOTE=b1rd;1745917]Thanks. I know it was just...

That is awesome that you have found a local source for bees! If they’re raising their own queens locally, it means that you will have a hive that already is well suited to your climate and adapted to...

I just did an inspection on my Survivor colony, and all 3 of the Better Comb frames are filled wall-to-wall with nectar, and some of the upper cells are capped. I still have them clustered in the...

    Re: BetterComb Experience, Anyone?

If you could do us a favor and let us know how your bees react to it that would be awesome! I didn't start this thread in an attempt to make beekeeping more expensive for new beeks. I just saw an...

    Re: BetterComb Experience, Anyone?

I am curious if you've received yours yet? If not yet, will you post when they start using it and how? I find it interesting that in my survivor colony, even though I put the 3 bettercomb frames in...

Re: Double nuc, a nod to Mike Palmer

In my case, I am using it because these colonies are weak and won't be built up enough to overwintering strength by the time winter comes. Putting them in the double nuc means they will share heat...

Re: Double nuc, a nod to Mike Palmer

Michael Palmer, I ended up with (2) weak nucs this, my first year of beekeeping, later in the season. If my Mentor hadn't suggested I watch your sustainable apiary videos, I don't know how I would...

    Re: BetterComb Experience, Anyone?

I do have 3 frames of Bettercomb in my Bee Weaver Survivor colony about 3/4 full of nectar 10 days after installing it. My Caucasians only received one frame of the Bettercomb, and they have it...

That is what my Saskatraz Queen looked like when she first returned from her mating flight. She fattened up really quickly once she was laying eggs. Did you put her back in the hive when you found...

Re: Post Your Bee Pics Here

I love bumble bees, too! Awesome pic!

    I'm sorry, I can't see your pic?

Robbing is scary! If you ever watch YouTube, one of my favorites on there is Frederick Dunn, and he often...

Re: First shot at marking queen

Oh, how funny! I just was advised to practice on drones to get comfortable with handling queens. Maybe mark a few more to get technique down to see how you can prevent the spazzy twisty part in the...

    Re: Is this unusual?

Are you planning on looking in the brood box? I'm subscribing to learn from this. Good luck!
  18. Re: New Bee Keeper, New Colony, New Equipment - What Could Go Wrong?!

This is exciting! I split my Saskatraz in half when I discovered they had gone queenless back in May. I'm really glad I did, because while I divided the queen cells evenly between original hive &...
  19. Re: Let me show you the "Dance of my People" ;)

It's really cool to see that behavior! I haven't seen my colonies doing that yet.

    Re: Bee Hive Stand Question

If you are in garden zone 10a, you might not have to worry about starting this late in the season like we do up here, but I'd find out from a local club if it's seasonally hard on the bees if you get...

    Re: Bee Hive Stand Question

I know it's not that pretty, but I love my cinder blocks/4'x4' cedar stand. I don't have to find flat surfaces to place things on when I'm doing my inspections because those cinder blocks make handy...

    Re: Bee Hive Stand Question

If you don't have heat that exceeds 85 it would be ok to have the screened bottom board on a solid stand, and you can just put the pull out tray on the bottom slot position to add for more air flow....

    Re: Bee Hive Stand Question

If you are planning on having a screened bottom board ever in the future, they do recommend having an open hive stand. Have you made your bottom board choice yet?
