    Re: Questions on hive entrance

I have used only a 3 inch entrance (all year long) for the past four years. I think it helps reduce robbing.

Re: Why are my bees not drinking their syrup?

I add a "blup" of lemon juice (Real lemon) to my sugar water. It adds a smell that the bees like and some acidity to the sugar.

Re: Hole size to exclude mice?

I like the 1/2 hardware cloth also. I use one screw in the bottom corner -so that I can swivel the hardware cloth "up" to totally open the entrance.
  7. Re: Langstroth to Slovenian type AZ hive transition- any practical advice?

I agree with Vance. My AZ hives are only 2 high, which with a queen excluder, means that a queen can fill that bottom part quickly. I need to check these hives probably twice as often as my Langs....

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

    Re: Cultivating milkweed

I collected some "common milkweed" seed last fall and put in my refer for the winter. I will plant into small trays and then transplant out into my fields.

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

It was 45 degrees F here in Mid Missouri today. Forecast is to be above freezing for next 4-5 days. This will be a very short winter. I love this "Global Warming".

Re: 2017 and 2018 honey very different

My 2018 honey all crystallized within six months. First time I have had honey crystallize at any age.

Re: Monterey BT for wax moth prevention?

I also have used Bt-K (Monterey BT) in my gardens for the past 40 years. The worms eat the spore and get sick very quickly (within hours to 1/2 a day). They may still be alive the following day,...

Re: melter honey $$ per pound

I don't know either. I never had bulk honey to just "give away".
  14. Re: Where is the cheapest place to buy mineral oil for my SHB swimming pool?

Tractor Supply and Orschlen Farm & Home have the mineral oil (laxative for cows and horses) in gal jugs for about $50.
  15. Re: Solvenian AZ Hives - access from rear no need to lift boxes

I don't find any difference in amount of beetles between "inhouse"AZ hives and outdoor Langs.
  16. Re: Solvenian AZ Hives - access from rear no need to lift boxes

VickyLynn, in the AZ hives, do you leave the queen excluder in place? I leave my in, but just wondered about removing it.43083

    Re: Goldenrod Coming In

Here in Mid-Missouri, I have never seen more than 3 bees on Goldenrod per year. And I have a lot of Goldenrod on my farm. I do not know why they don't like it.

Re: Wasting time feeding this early?

I started feeding my bees the first day of August. Not enough rain; even the grass was dying. I checked the hives today and "WOW" - there was a bunch of bees. I will not be collecting honey this...
  19. Re: Storing supers before extracting - dehumidifier???

I purchased a 10 cu foot freezer for my bee barn. I store frames full of honey in it from spring through summer, and extract one time in August. I take all the frames out of the freezer the day...

    Re: Observation hive novelty

I don't use a tube; I use a piece of 1 1/4 inch plastic pipe (electrical conduit). However, I may try a piece of clear pipe. It would be neat to watch the bees as they crawl in and out.
    I have...

Re: Hybrid AZ Hive/Langstroth Hive Concept

The two rods in our AZ hives work fine. I believe any extra would just be more for the bees to "glue together".

    Re: Wisconsin Goldenrod

Here in mid-Missouri I never see bees on the Goldenrod. I just looked again yesterday- full bloom- not one bee.

    Re: Honey bound, most uncapped...

Last year, every time that I went in the supers, if I found a frame of caped honey - I would pull the frame and place it in a freezer. A frame with foundation was replaced on the super. I really...
