Re: Bamboo skewers as a frame

I replied on the other thread. Sam is using his style of Warre hive for mating nucs, not trying to make honey. So the bamboo skewers are fine. No need for expensive custom made woodenware. Sam's...

    Re: Basswood/linden - ID and bloom ???

Really?! Already. Linden blooms here at the end of June for Little Leaf Linden, and the first two weeks of July for American Basswood. Our Basswoods are just getting their leaves.
  5. Re: michael palmer cell builder...im a believer now!!!!

I used to use cell protectors. Found it unnecessary. In fact, I think I have better acceptance without cell protectors. Rick Fell at VaTech believes cell protectors limit the pheromone transfer from...

Re: shaker box what am i doing wrong?

A little bit of smoke wafted over the top of the shaker box will encourage them to start down. Once they begin going down and nassanoving, just knock or brush down those that begin to cross the tape....
  7. Re: For the Michael Palmer cell builders, crazy scenario!

This is why I use an excluder when shaking bees from the Q+ part into the Q- cell builder. You don't have to actually see the queen, just watch in the shaker box and if she's there put her back into...
  8. Re: For the Michael Palmer cell builders, crazy scenario!

Did you shake bees from q+ to cell builder? Could she have been transferred as well?

    Re: Bush ID

Yes, nectar. Some years supers filled. Vermont has declared the plant an invasive. I have a yard where the farmer sprayed all honeysuckle on the farm. No more supers full there.
  11. Re: queens coming with bad weather until Friday.

So, you're talking one day? Don't worry so much. No problem keeping caged queens for a few days. Keep in a warm place. Give one drop of water a day ...on the screen. You can also add a few nurse bees...
  12. Re: Is Maple Flow In NE A Bust This Year?

It wasn't the greatest, but enough to help with starvation. did you get a dandelion flow today? Good one here. First of the year. Maybe they can build up now.
  13. Re: set up first Palmer style cell builder.

I pull the cells and distribute them to he mating nucs we caught the day before. I remove the deep that was the cell building box that's above the excluder, full of bees but no brood. Those bees can...
  14. Re: set up first Palmer style cell builder.

For a cell builder? You absolutely need to check the entire broodnest...everything below the excluder. Bees have a way of hiding queen cells.
  15. Re: set up first Palmer style cell builder.

The way my schedule works, I'm checking the CB for cells every 10 days. First when setting it up with added brood. Then 10 days later on grafting day. Then 10 days later I harvest the cells, and...

    Re: Replacement wedges?

I gave up using wedge top bars years ago. Too many break when renewing foundation. Grooved top bars and hot wax works better for me. No broken wedges and no nails. To renew, dip top bar in hot water...

Re: Alley Method for Rearing Queens

I'd rather just graft. Yeah, I know, I know. Alley says his method makes better queens. Whatever.

    Re: Bananas

From Mexico to South America, beekeepers use ripe bananas for supplemental bee feed. No reactions.
