  1. Re: Stopping a swarm if you have no empty comb and no other hives to place frames in

A week ago I was pretty cocksure with swarm management via splits, agressive supering, and checkerboarding. Then this weekend happened. One in the trees on Friday, last seen heading North. One in the...
  2. Re: Wanting to get started on getting experience.

Yeah, do it. Know that the buy/sell spread will set you back a few hundred. But someone will take them off your hands for the right price or free.

    No ethical issue here.
  3. Re: Anyone else notice the "Do not sell my data"

i see it. Clicked it, got a popup, and chose "Do Not Sell My Data." No biggie ...
  4. Re: Why is my honey settling at the bottom of the jar?

No idea why, but I'd flip the jar for a few days, and call it good.

Re: 5 frame nuc box width

It annoys me to no end that they haven't standardized this yet. I have nucs from several sources, and none of them are compatible with any others, including tops and bottoms.

Re: Whelp, I now have 3 hives :waiting:

It is generally believed that bees do better in full sun, rather than shade. My limited experience doesn't prove that, but it sure doesn't refute it either. I would at least give partial sun.

Re: Permanently fixing bottom to nucs?

Same here, in the spring or early summer. If I want to overwinter it and cannot reasonably build it up, I prefer 5 over 5 arrangement rather than a single deep.

Re: A hint of vanilla flavor?

The propolis in my hives tend to have a vanilla and cinnamon flavor. I have no idea if that is typical, as I have never tasted propolis from any other source.

I wonder if there is a connection...

Re: Permanently fixing bottom to nucs?

Yep, that is a good plan. I screw mine on for convenience, but sometimes want to add a box, so I need to be able to separate them easily.

    Re: Swarm Cells?

They are swarm cups/cells. Many times the bees build them, but they stay empty, on standby. If they are empty, they are called swarm cups, and there is no response needed from you. If they have...

Hmm, never seen sumac here, but there is a native variety.

    Re: Preparing honey bottles

I shake them out as well as I can, and usually let them dry overnight. Shake again, and whatever is left, stays.

    A hint of vanilla flavor?

This week our flow kicked into high gear after a wet spring. I was starting to think it wasn't going to happen!

Anyway, while adding supers, I scraped off a bit of burr comb, and popped it into my...

It sounds like you have a plan! I'd like to hear how it turns out if you build it. With photos, of course.

The wax melter is a box, your room is a box. Will addiing tin cans increase the heat in the melter?

I will grant that adding flat black paint to the room (like the melter) will reduce loss to...

    Re: Life Hacks

Thinking this through - if you put the heater inside the room, it is heated by the sun that comes through the window, and releases that heat into the room. Without it, the sun comes through the...

    Re: Life Hacks

Forget the can heater, a screen heater is easier to build, and in side by side tests it outperforms. I built one and used it for a couple of years ago in South Carolina, and it gave noticable heat....

Re: If you had it to do all over...

    1. Two hives is not sustainable, start with at least 4, and double that the 2nd year.
    2. Don't fritter money away on "bee toys" and fancy queens.
    3. Kill varoa, relentlessly.
    4. Plastic foundation...
