  1. Re: Are you ready to replace carrying heavy honey supers by hand with an electric pow

Well, there's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again. Do you, NYer or...
  2. Re: Are you ready to replace carrying heavy honey supers by hand with an electric pow

Are you somehow forced to hire them??? Arguing over a machine vs. properly hiring staff is pointless. If they don't show up as expected or work as trained, that's a failure of the business owner.

  3. Re: Are you ready to replace carrying heavy honey supers by hand with an electric pow

The original question was why NA commercial beekeepers don't use cranes or other 40 year old tools, I was offering an answer. Of course everyone runs their operation differently, including...
  4. Re: Are you ready to replace carrying heavy honey supers by hand with an electric pow

Neither of these are the case. Young/foreign labour with fume boards (or maybe tip up) is the solution. A crane costs as much as a forklift in some cases and requires a lot more maintenance while...

    Re: Radial Extractor Stand

Bolt the stand to the floor and mount the extractors on top of vibration pads.

    Re: VM MINI VAPORIZER REVIEW

Looks like a good unit for the price point for a smaller operation. How'd your back fare after doing that all day? I actually don't really mind the weight of the regular VM, and I'd rather lift...

    Re: Syrup pump question

Is this any different than what farm supply stores sell for 1/4 of the price as "air seeder hose"? I've had hoses eventually spring a pinhole leak through normal wear, but never had one collapse.

    Re: Hot room design

A few questions to ask yourself:
What's the height on your hot room? Easier to make it bit taller so you can double stack your pallets of honey.
Spray foam insulation may cost a few $$$ more and...
  9. Re: CO2 levels with Indoor Wintering Honeybees

Additional papers on CO2 and wintering from Dr. RASSOL BAHREINI, recently hired in Alberta at the CDC lab. These came from the presentation he made at the Alberta IPM conference today. If he will...

    Re: Spread sheet

Maybe not really what you're looking for, but this study was done in 2011 here in Alberta. Data is already being collected for a 5 year update, but I imagine it won't be published until next year or...

    Re: Inspections 100 hives

Here's some aggregate info from a few years ago in Alberta. I'm sure you can add 15-20% to every number in there since the info was collected from 2010 or so.

    Re: Canola polination

    http://www.producer.com/2016/04/do-more-bees-mean-more-canola-in-the-bin/

You are pollinating commercial canola? Most beekeepers don't usually charge for that in AB, but rather set bees there for...

    Re: VM Vaporizer

After some prodding from Jean-Marc and myself, Ed set up a booth at the Alberta convention that just ended yesterday. He mentioned that the next upgrade in the works is essentially an in-line...

    Re: VM Vaporizer

I don't have much faith in Hopguard II right now, but is everyone else in this thread assuming Bayvoral is DOA? Does anyone know if we'll have it for spring or if it will work?

    Re: VM Vaporizer

2 units showed up in the mail today for those keeping score and unable to make border runs. It was 12 days from the time Ed mailed them (Saturday) to pick up. Fees owing was $33.65 per unit. He has...

My usage in Canada would certainly be different that yours. Our bees are already broodless and wrapped. We run the vaporizer until it starts boiling out the top winter entrance.

My only regret is that I have but 2 thumbs up to give Jean-Marc. I also have heard of a few copycat machines in the works. It's no wonder companies are hesitant to supply new products to the bee...

    Re: bulk sugar pricing??

Yep. Beemaid pricing, same as everyone else. 500 km from the Rogers plant in Taber, AB, so the shipping is roughly $1800CDN. It was a rough year on delivery though...the factory wasn't working...

    Re: bulk sugar pricing??

Well, since you asked about bulk pricing and not buying 80 pallets at your local Costco, I get a triaxle (about 5000 gallons) of premixed syrup delivered to my shop for $14,500 USD.
