    Re: Buckwheat yield per acre

May I suggest that you consider planting buckwheat twice a year on your full 2-3 acres? And that you also plant a third crop (mustard) as an overwintering cover crop about 3-4 weeks before the first...
  2. phone or address for Mark Berninghausen?

Can anyone PM me the phone or South Carolina address of Mark (sqkcrk)? I'm supposed to drive to SC in two days to help him out and he hasn't been responding to his Beesource mail. Probably because...

    Re: ID Tags for Hives

That looks good. Any idea about the price?
  4. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

Rookie 2531, I'm not misreading your post, and hope I didn't sidetrack your thread. I'm not trying to say you don't have quality joints.

I was trying to bring in a perspective on speed and the...
  5. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

Frank, I agree with all that you say. Butt joints connect end grain to side grain and are not the strongest. I think that my thicker wood will help but I won't know for sure until I've used them for...
  6. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

My opinion is that if you're going to use one or the other, the use of glue will do you more good than a double staple. If wood is too thin and you accidentally get the air pressure too high on your...
  7. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

I see what you're saying. It actually is my intent to use butt frame joints on full size frames too. But not because I want to pass them off to an unsuspecting public. Because they are for my own...
  8. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

I think we are talking about two different things. It sounds like you have found DIY frames that were the wrong size and were stuck by propolis. This seems to be a letter of incorrect size rather...
  9. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

I understand why people claim that DIY frames are inefficient. But I made 400 frames for my mini nucs in just about 4 hours. I wasn't really watching the clock so it could have been longer. But...
  10. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

I also love to see how other's solve problems. They are always different, and about half of them are an improvement.
  11. Re: Stop using smoke, use diluted lactic acid.

Beepro, I think the answer to your question depends on the biological method by which lactic acid works. If it works in the same manner as OAV or powder then towels would do. But as you are...
  12. Re: Stop using smoke, use diluted lactic acid.

    Apinor,

I wasn't familiar with lactic acid until this thread, thank you. To extend on Jean Marc's observation, could one put lactic acid in a vaporizing fogger for regular (constant?) treatment? ...
  13. Re: Small cell foundation less frame design using 2x lumber

Pjigar, your first two pictures show that you shaped the entire (2x8?) before ripping it into individual end bars. What machine did you use for this?
  14. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

JWChesnut, thanks for your informative insight. I see that the bee community is closer than most and the rate of theft is minor. Even so, a beek with 1,000 hives in the field is leaving $200k...
  15. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

Ok, so I can see that needing a generator is too far a stretch. What is the range of the jammers? Personally, I don't see game cameras going unnoticed by thieves.
  16. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

I'm sure that jamming can be done.

But you can still make an effective anti-theft system. Several types of GPS trackers using multiple frequencies and hidden in different parts of the...
  17. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

These are the types I'm talking about. They're often used for motorcycles.

  18. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

What's the difference between the Spot Trace for $119 and the motorcycle anti-theft trackers on ebay for $11? I'm just asking a general question, not asking you for technical expertise.
  19. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

I'm sure you're right, and I hope there are already a lot of GPS units out there. The pollination industry doesn't need to reach 100% saturation (and I don't think you were implying that), by the...
  20. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

OK, I see these small GPS trackers on the internet are just $25 and have 3-6 month batteries. Why doesn't everyone have them? I assume most beeks use treated 2x4's for pallets and a tracker...
  21. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

Do these cameras have GPS locators?
  22. Re: Stolen, 482 8-frame hives on 4 way pallets, Yuba City, Ca.

Most people have an app on their cell phones called "Find my phone". If your phone is in an area with cell phone service, it gives the directions to find your phone. I suggest some enterprising...
  23. Re: shared feeder in double mini nucs?

I've also read that workers can jump from one queen to another. I'll put queen excluding screen between the comb and the feeder so the queen can't drown. With top feeders I worry about raccoons, we...
  24. shared feeder in double mini nucs?

I am putting together some double mini nucs. I made mini frames at 5.66" length which fit 3 to a standard frame so I can get comb drawn on them in a full sized hive before transfer to the mini nuc. ...

    Re: Frames from scratch?

Thanks. If the end bars were taper cut the frames would have a couple less inches of bee space there. Not sure thats a big advantage, but even a small advantage helps.
