Re: Foundationless 'Gold Dust' - well, almost.

    My case is easily explained.
    I do cut-and-strain harvest a lot.
In the picture above, I harvested areas of the upper comb and left empty combs below for reuse.

    Upon reinsertion of this butchered...

Re: Foundationless 'Gold Dust' - well, almost.

    It depends.
Here is ~1.25 spacing with the drone brood embedded.

For 1.25 to work - EVERYTHING must be perfect.
The bigger the frame, the more chances for the imperfections.
    On a smaller...

    Re: Preserve Genetics

Ideally you want to start "preserving the genetics" a bit earlier (July would be perfect).
This gives you better chances to make daughter queens from the desired mother queen.
    Still can do it, but...

Re: Found a queen and some bees on the grass

Pretty normal timeline for a freshly mated queen.
Of course, it is possible she did NOT mate also.
    Too early to tell.
Within 1-2 weeks I'd expect fresh brood.

Re: The state of United States

Why, all the information is public.
For example, the Russians are loving it in Finland (the only hassle - need to learn the Finish, not the easiest language; but knowing English you can get by).

Re: A reflection on beekeeping by a newbee

If anything, should protect the eyes.
    Seriously.
This is not about being cool and whispering to the bees.
A well placed sting could very well affect the future pilot carrier.
    I wear a mosquito...

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

People see things differently for as long as the issue on hand does not touch them personally.
Once the actual "touch" does occur, the seeing will change.

You can manage your bees and mostly...

Re: A reflection on beekeeping by a newbee

There is still plenty of time before that first sting right between the eyes.
Other than that, having mild bees is something everyone wants.

Re: feeding a cell starter sugar water

    So today is August 4th.
Is this still a project for the season 2020?
Getting kinda late for MA, especially if project is still in the research phase.

Like Akademee above, I don't even bother...

I have been using this design (see LJ's drawing) for few winters now.
If any problems I have is - too much ventilation.

Re: Where do superseded queens go?

This year I am learning how to work mating nucs.

    I have a case where a surely queen-less nuc magically became queen-right.

    Re: We three queens

I am very glad I made few foam mini-nucs - these work great as parking places for queens while taking minimal resources.
What used to take me a whole full-size nuc, now a cup of bees can do.

Re: Converting 1:1 to 2:1 formula

In fact, this 2:1 thing is a purely artificial approximation - it is driven by the point when no more sugar can be dissolved.
In some hard waters, ~1.8:1 - is the best you can do.
    If you use pure...

Re: Converting 1:1 to 2:1 formula

It depends on exact quantity of your 1:1 now - to figure out if 4lb is what you need.
But sugar is cheap and water is even cheaper (to be concerned with the lab precision).
    :)

    Add 2 pounds;...

Re: Converting 1:1 to 2:1 formula

Being a small scale (like yourself), I operate by standard 4lb grocery store sugar bags.

    This makes 2:1 mix trivial.
Mix one 4lb bag with one quart of water - done (you got yourself 2:1 mix).

Meanwhile, the public is being successfully diverted into fighting over LBM, abortions, welfare-queens, and similar insignificant and made-up chicken-poop.
