Re: Using a queenless hive for a cell builder?

So I grabbed a frame out of a nuc here at the house. I was kicking myself for not just introducing the queen. Grafted up a bar and ran it over to Boring. Light rain 50 degrees, broke the hive in half...

Re: Using a queenless hive for a cell builder?

No, trying to find a frame of fully capped brood without at least a band of eggs and uncapped is rare unless I have been shoveling new frames in front of a queen in a picket situation. I only have 3...

Using a queenless hive for a cell builder?

I have double deep that I put a queen cell into to requeen. It is now hopelessly queenless. Could I just drop my next round of grafts into it and use it for a builder / finisher, for 10 days but ...

    Re: Bee club blues

After I made fun of the 1 hr commercial for the presentation they seem to have ‘lost my dues’. They have a new system using pay pal. So I pay on line to become part of the club again or suck it up.

    Re: Bee club blues

Well I guess I can’t complain after all.
Especially if it means that I have to step up and be an officer!

Re: Using a shaker box to find elusive queen(s)

Couple of weeks ago I was making a cell builder and looked down into the ‘dregs and drones’ of the excluder to see the queen. I already had the other hive back together; it was quite the shock....

Re: Queen cell fail (all fail to emerge)

    Some did yes.
I was real gentle with this second batch. After Franks comment i am hoping I do not end up with 20 queen less mating nucs and no new cells for them. I took a grafting break when I...

Queen cell fail (all fail to emerge)

My earlier graft I had about 10/16 drawn out with a lot of burr comb, Zero hatch. I never had a zero before. I was really struggling to find the cells for all the wax. I messed with the cells way too...

    Bee club blues

Our bee club has been turning everything into a ‘for profit’ business. The powers that bee are charging for everything from classes to getting together for bulk buys. The meetings are turning into...

Re: Using old queen excluders, really old

looks like a lot of joinery! The ends are different lengths and cuts. At first I thought that you ripped some of the laminate flooring to strips.
Nice work, you will have to put it on the outside so...

    Re: Bees attacking neighborhood

Same situation here this spring. I found out which one it was because when I opened it I thought that it was a yellow jacket nest. Got several inside my vail and several hundred stinging my pants....
  12. Re: My EZ finger safe jig for making the relief in sidebars.

Clever, I usually use a joiner with a stop. Another thing that makes it safer for me is that I do them before cutting them to width or length. It is one of the first steps, I then chop saw them...
  13. Re: This finger joint jig is stupid simple for bee boxes.

That is pretty slick. I like the 3/8 shim! Router would be slow going compared to a table saw so I wonder if there is a dovetail option? If you are going to spend the time it would be a nice touch.

Re: mason jar feeders with copper 1/8" tubes

curious to see the inside of the poly tube lid. Is it epoxy?
The rivet has a flare so fits perfect, but you are limited to the 1/2"

Re: mason jar feeders with copper 1/8" tubes

Exactly, I closed my vice until the jaws almost hit the rivet (flat part up). Put the 9 I needed side by side and tapped each one out with a hammer. Not much holding that pin in place.

Re: mason jar feeders with copper 1/8" tubes

I was building some more of these and ran out of the compression fittings mentioned by Bodo. The things are spendy and I did not want to go into town.
I found steel rivets, 1/8 dia, 1/2" long. Tap...

Re: Queen Rearing with Michael Palmer method

I do not think you are missing anything. The only place his method uses bees is getting the mating nucs stocked. His videos all have them ready to go so he is not showing how many frames you need for...

    Re: Tight Smoker Lid

Good reminder that mine are the same. I have to pry them open with my hive tool. I never think about it after I get home.
Is that little ring on the cover for the cork (like on the video linked...

    Re: Mountain camp ingredients...

I always figured mountain camp was putting a piece of newspaper over the frames and pouring dry sugar on it. Some hit the newspaper with a spray bottle to get it damp.
  20. Re: Dr. Tom Seeley's new book "The Lives of Bees"

I see that my library has both of his books in paper and audio. I put the new one on hold and checked out the other. I have no idea how such a book would be audio but for the price I am going to try...

    Re: Motorizing an extractor

I drilled and tapped the end of my extractor. I use a cordless drill to turn the shaft. Way too easy. If your interested I can go into more detail of how to get it perfectly centered.

Re: The right number of hives to keep it fun

What has not been mentioned is the amount of locations. For a while my hive count did not change but I had some in people’s fields or in their orchards. 15 hives in 3 places takes more time than 15...

Re: Looking for a Wyoming person about antelope

Well the 270 did the job. I was concerned as it was close to 70 yards that the wind may have affected the shot. he is heavy and about 15" but I do not think the cutters will get me into the book....
