  1. Re: Setting out deep frames of honey so bees put it in medium supers?

    Uncap.
    Spray with water heavily.
    Give to the bees.
They will clean it all up.

Since I have long hives I have it easy - I insert such frames beyond the follower board and spread them wide.
    They...

Re: why do my bees become ever more gentle?

I'd rather be surprised with such a question.
The bees are "cross-pollinated" animals with the crazy level of polyandry.
Every particular mated queen is, essentially, a new and unique combination...

Sticky: Re: Riverderwent Survival Treatment Free 2017

    Of course not sufficient.
What I mean is - a certain population of some specific resistant bees attached to a locality is the key.
Certainly you seem to enjoy a scenario similar to this.
    I don't....

Re: The Disposition Of Scout Bees

I indeed observed something similar - a handful of scouts seemed to have occupied a trap for a few weeks and just stayed in.

To my dismay, they have been chasing away all other potential scouts...

Re: The Disposition Of Scout Bees

They have committed to the trap.
    Good news.
    Wait for them and see.

    Why jump ahead of yourself?
Until the swarm actually shows up (IF) why the worry?

Per my experience so far - TF is largely about "location, location, location".
    First and foremost.

Re: Do I need to cut out moldy/dead brood?

Free queen is a good deal.

Consider that foam nuc idea (a little shipping box or slap it together).
At least they can cluster properly and regulate the temp possibly (in the foam).
    Don't even...

Re: Do I need to cut out moldy/dead brood?

Honestly, this is a doomed project.
Buying a queen was wasted money.
Sorry, just saying what I am seeing.

If I see such colony, I just walk away and let the nature take its course.
    Monkeying...

Re: Top Bar Newspaper Combine Question

    Sure, checkerboard them.

If have freezer space - sure freeze them.
I have no vacant freezer space - have been putting separate combs into zip-lock begs and storing them into a tight plastic...

Re: Trapping 2020 - success rate?

    Same here.
Very active scouting few days ago, with the bees fighting for the backyard trap.
Then rain cut it all off.
    Now - not much.
The rain could have stopped the pending swarms (or the owners...

    Re: Foundation-less frames

    Why not?
Thick wire as a bottom bar works for the BS member from Slovenia with his little frames (I forgot his nick but he posted pictures).
    No issues documented.

Bottom bar on a frame (be it...

  13. Re: 2, 3, 5, or 35 What are the least practical to get out of buying bees every year?

Agreed IF the combining is done blind.
Disagreed IF the combining is done with needed information on hand (specifically health status of the units to be combined).
    Nothing wrong with combining...
  14. Re: 2, 3, 5, or 35 What are the least practical to get out of buying bees every year?

You need to be philosophically against buying and make it the priority and hold that line.

There are ways to get (and re-get) yourself bees without buying and retain the bees without buying.

    If...

Re: Top Bar Newspaper Combine Question

The size of the colony is not that important with the gradual combine.
The bees are supposed to select the best queen out of the two somehow.
This means they should select the "best queen" - in...

Well used backpacks ("hand downs" from my kids) - also free.

  25. Re: Does dong a bunch of walk away Nuc splits count as queen rearing?

Selling shovels to the gold-diggers was historically a successful business model.

Still, there are few honest BS members right here who do not sell books or the like - and yet they keep the bees...
