    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

My year has been "reactive" beekeeping, I go out to apply a super and end up splitting to prevent the swarm. I advise that often the plan you have when you lite the smoker is not the one that...

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

its quite a story, short version. had 16 last fall, lost all but 6 to the winter and varora. 1 hive down here was full of swarm cells in April.
I did a 6 way split, and still shook 2 swarms off a...

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

All, I am of the same mind, I will begin pulling back the 9 to 11 decoy hives after the 4th of july weekend. redeploy the combs to get the NUCs up to 8 or 10 frame gear. I do still have 40 deep...
  4. Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

For what its worth, the 6 Sascratraz packages I hiveded last spring, the honey froze cracking the combs, and pooled in the bottom of the hive, like between a pint and a quart, I did not like it much,...

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

#1911 is the result of 5# of bees from the 'bee tree' that were supplied with a frame of open brood from #1909. Imagine my surprise when I saw loads of capped brood inside this hive today, 23 days...

    Re: Super Size?

If weight is not an issue, IMO go all deeps. The cost of a "frame" is somewhat the same , the deep is 9 5/8 the medium is 6 5/8 so mathematically 2 deeps is very close to the same volume as 3...

    Re: Latest in Darwinian Beekeeping

Hi Greg V, Caught a swarm yesterday, one of my own. The interesting part. "bees prefer X Size hive/nest" I have a NUC 5 deep over 5 medium, that do to my own mis management, swarmed. So if a...

    Re: multiple eggs per cell

Hi Ravenseye, just did a check of a swarm caught 7-10 days ago. I see 5 frames of bees, almost every cell is an egg or 2 or 3, or honey or pollen. IE none of the cells in the cluster area is empty....

  10. Re: My first two hives of 10,000 have been ordered :)

Great point, thanks for offering it. I still somewhat disagree, if it is your swarm that build up way faster than you thought and ran out of space, is it a swarm gene queen? if it is,, then the...

    Re: Want More Honey

    Where to start....

8 frame or 10 medium or deep. I do not think this matters as much to honey production.
you do not "lose" a hive to wax moths, the hive weekend , died then the wax moths moved...
  12. Re: How much honey to give your hive land sponsors

Also depends on what they do. If they keep a path way to the hives open and trimmed. And if they harvest anything that needs pollination.
Often they are having a benefit as well. If they had...

    Re: Reverse queen splits

Pick your 5 worst Queens and plot thier demise. add the brood and bees to weaker hives with good queens , not you have 35.
Sell some, either full hive or NUC.

Re: Laying worker in a queenright nuc?

To Me she looks fine, the bees will remove , ingest the extra eggs. She may have more eggs that the nurse bees can care for. A shake of nurse bees at the entrance 1 time a week for 3 could help.

  16. Re: about 12 queen cells in one hive. Harvest some? or let them bee?

It depends, most of the time the first queen out will open the side of the other queen cells and sting the queen before she emerges. Sometime they emerge at the same time as they were from same day...

    Re: Reverse queen splits

If one looks back for 1000 years, which is one of the "tactics" I use to better understand. Swarming is how bees reproduce, so with out "swarming" traits bees would eventually dwindle to nothing. ...

    Re: Reverse queen splits

+1 I will take a well developed swarm cell as well. not sure where this Bee center person got his funding from, but queen breeders is a good bet :)
  19. Re: about 12 queen cells in one hive. Harvest some? or let them bee?

You Can split if you have several queen cells. It would be if you wish for more hives. Or if you have a hive with a dud queen you can place a frame with 1 cell in it and let them supercede. Or what...
  20. Re: about 12 queen cells in one hive. Harvest some? or let them bee?

Use them, destroy them, let the hive swarm, those are more or less the options. As I cannot see your location, I'll just guess ,, northern Texas. If in your area there is flow left then you can...
  21. Re: Advice please, too late to reverse boxes?

concur, in my past I have the same issue, they rather deepen the existing cells/comb, that build a new one.
  22. Re: Changing the box of a new colony due to a defect

i have also soaked the box the set it on the driveway, with a lid or plywood , with 4 or so concrete blocks on it to "reorient" some of the fibers in the wood. moisture and pressure can have...
  23. Re: Advice please, too late to reverse boxes?

Hugh, you are a little light on some pertinent details.
Do you have an extractor?? if yes the I would shake the top honey laden box, of bees 1 frame at a time, placing into a different box. Place...
  24. Re: Changing the box of a new colony due to a defect

fine to do the box swap,, Pick a warm day > 70 take the hive off the bottom board set it to the side on the lid or something.. check under the bottom for ants, etc. re level, set the new hive body on...
