  1. Re: Finishing capped cells after day 5 without a mechanical incubator

Thank you. I have never attempted to place fresh grafts into the same starter/finisher as capped queen cells. Virgin queens do emit a small amount of QMP (drones target this on her mating flights)....

  3. Re: How I treat for mites and what works for me....

Larry: At a recent seminar I heard a well-respected entomologist (you know her) state that we had no evidence that OAV was anything more than a "Flash" treatment, which was only effective while the...

    Re: Laying Worker?

Why? Are LW drones genetically inferior to drones laid by a mated (or unmated) queen?

    Re: Bottling question

Thanks. That helps. I do not have a dedicated honey house either, so I will need to have portability as well.

    Re: Bottling question

My next purchase is either the Maxant 16 the Maxant 25 or the MUTT. I will have the Maxant bottling tank before the 2020 season. Eric, any regrets with not buying the 25 gallon instead of the 16?

  7. Re: I am trying to speed up my hive inspections.

I keep looking until I see very young "C" shaped larva.
  8. Re: Kids shooting at my hives with a pellet gun?

    It would have been irresistible to a 12 year-old psm1212. I was such a little ****.

    Re: Mating NUC pheromone strip

I got this great picture of a virgin chewing into a QC in one of my hives last spring. I think I posted it on beesource after I took it last year.

    Re: Mating NUC pheromone strip

I just found this study that Dewey Caron did in 1979. I am not sure that this fully answers our question. Would like to get access to the full article, but can't seem to figure out how to get it. ...

    Re: Mating NUC pheromone strip

Right. You said it much better. Queen stings the unemerged queens. Workers tear down the cells. I have always assumed the workers actions were just cleaning up and possibly harvesting the royal...

    Re: Mating NUC pheromone strip

Kaizen is raising queens in mating nucs. So he is transferring capped queen cells from his incubator into these nucs. These mating nucs DO NOT actually make queen cells. In fact, you want them to...

    Re: Mating NUC pheromone strip

Terrence: I want to take a stab at this, but I hope Michael will correct me where I get it wrong. The worker bees don't tear down queen cells, other queens do. Since there is only the QMP in the...

I didn't know this, but it finally explains what I have been seeing in my LW hives. Thanks.
  15. Re: Once the queen emerges how long does it take for her to reach her full adult size

I can't improve on Michael Bush's answer, but might be able to drill down to some specific date ranges. All ranges are rough estimates (therefore, overlaps). Weather can change a lot of things. ...

    Re: forced brood break

You can trap her in a push-in cage for 14 days within the hive. This will allow a very brief brood break.

Another method: If you have a honey super that is full of honey and/or capped...

Re: Trapping 2019 - success rate?

    Yes. Plastic.

My assumption is that the scout bees will explore prospective homes and measure them for volume. Seeley's Democracy book has an illustration of how they do this. What I am...

  24. Re: Does the queen run from sunlight, wind etc when you open top of hive?

Not sure exactly, but I am fairly confident that the queen does try to avoid sunlight. When the queen is on the face of a frame, it will more than not, run to the other side of the frame, or the...
