  1. Re: I assume there are a few rail fans here.

Here are some pics that I have from last year. One is near LaSalle (near Greely) Colorado, and the other one was outside Chyenne, Wyoming. It was well worth the drive both times (about 1-2 hours...

    Re: Packaging for Resale

This is what you need to do.

In Colorado under the cottage industry laws I have specific labeling requirements. I am also not allowed to sell my honey to someone else with the intention that...
  3. Re: Transition from shallow frames to deep frames?

I would add the deep boxes under the shallow box every time you add a new box. The bees should move down and fill the upper boxes with honey/syrup as it hatches out and moves up.

    p.s. Where...

Re: Sources for glass jars ??

If you are concerned about the volume fill the jar with water, then pour it out into a measuring cup to check the volume.

I have some 5/8 pint jars (that I got for free), but I just sell them as...

    Re: Insurance

Maybe try looking into an umbrella coverage. It would probably also be worth looking into the food safety laws in your state, you may have some protection there.

    Re: APIVAR

I might have to try that. I have been putting a zip tie thru the hole and just centering the strip on it. The built in hanging tabs dont work very well.

I have had good luck with apivar with my...

Re: Detering a Large Bumble bee

I dont think carpenter bees are that common in my area. I usually see rust butted bumble bees, but now I know what to look for.

Since it took going thru a 3 ft wide door, flying 6 feet along a...

    Detering a Large Bumble bee

I think I have a large bumble be that is thinking of starting a nest in my sunporch. The sunporch is about 8x10, with all but about a 36" door on 3 sides screened in. The 4th side is attached to...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2020

In the 3 full years I have been doing this the flow seems to be all over the place for when it stops/hives stop gaining wait here (near Ft Collins). I think some of this is my management, some of it...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2020

My hives are doing ok. I have one that is building up well and is at about 4 medium boxes filled with honey, one that never built up well, and I split when I found them trying to swarm. My package...

    5 frame nuc box width

Is there a standard for the width of a 5 frame nuc, or is this not nearly as standardized as 8 and 10 frame boxes?

I have a 5 frame box from kelly that is 9" wide on the outside. The Mann Lake...

Re: New design of a honey extractor.

I think most (hobbyist) use 5 gallon buckets with air tight lids for bulk storage. You can also get 1 or 2 gallon buckets fairly easy. I suspect it will be much harder to completely empty the wine...

Re: Whelp, I now have 3 hives :waiting:

That is about where I am at, I shoot for 1 deep and 5-8 mediums per hive. I run a deep on bottom and stack mediums on top of that.

    Re: Entrance reducer

Yes, unless you know for a definite fact that there are no other hives within 3 miles of you in any direction, you can not control the other hives trying to rob yours.

    Re: Dwindling hive post Apivar

When I have used apivar it appeared that the queen slowed down, but the hives remained at about stable population when this happened. I have not seen it cause a hive to crash. I think adding food...

Re: New design of a honey extractor.

I know Guinness Uses nitrogen for carbonating their beer, and most other brands use CO2. I think the N2 creates smaller bubbles, and they flow differently thru the beer.

Re: New design of a honey extractor.

I was thinking pure nitrogen might work well. N2 might be cheaper than argon. I think most extractors would collapse long before you pull a vacuum, and you will probably flash boils stuff out of...
  20. Re: "Extractor Dancing" - FYI, a solution - maybe

hmmm, pondering here, and I have not tried this, but I wonder if putting the casters in "bowls" would work well. It might absorb some of the energy from being off balance, while still keeping the...
  21. Re: Posca Paint Pens...quality not what it used to be??

I think it is the fumes from the solvents that are usually toxic. The amount in a small drop on the queen is probably not enough to matter, especially after the paint dries.

    Re: Cardinal Sin

Just mention that birds eat bees, so having the bees at the feeders may make it easier for the birds to find and eat them.

I dont know if humming birds actually eat bees, but I know some others...
  23. Re: Question for Northern, High Desert Bee Keepers

I have come to the conclusion that watching drone cells is the best way to judge when to make a split. If a hive is not making drones they do not have resources coming in or it is to early in the...

Re: If you had it to do all over...

stop accidentally squishing queens, I have done this twice in 4 years with 1-4 hives at a time.

Second thing is keep mites under control and don't assume that the mite treatment worked. All 3...
