  1. Re: Moving hives short distances, forcing reorientation, and stragglers!

Expect to lose 50% or more of the foraging bees...the 40% that you don't lose are the younger foragers that have yet to solidify location.
  2. Re: How are your bees looking going into winter?

Well...I'm just north of you....Maple Valley, Fall City. Bees are looking great. If you pop the hoods on a few of yours you notice a nice coating of white wax courtesy of the English ivy. My...

Re: Cost of treating Varroa mites?

It's all about the Economic threshold when the money lost for not effectively treating for varroa exceeds the cost
    of effectively treating.

    Re: Late queens

It's my opinion if full hives are still raising Drones...ie you Drone brood...then there's no reason you'll get well mated fresh queens...weather depending of course.

    Re: Varroa discussion

I for one see the problems associated with varroa to get even worse before it gets better. Remember when it was ok to have 8-10 percent mite count during the mid to late 90's Then as time...

    Re: Yellow jackets

The best way to discourage yellow jackets is to keep the hive healthy. As long as they are being repelled all is good. A healthy hive is no match for yellow jackets.

Is HFCS ok as a winter feed supplement?

We had an awful year in the PNW and a few of my hives and most of my nucs need to be feed to make it through the winter. Normally I'd bite the bullet and feed sugar but this year it's going to be...
