Re: How do I relax w/bees?

    Actually, this guy: https://youtu.be/U7FD5k0Tr8I

Champy, like others have said, comfort comes mostly from time with the bees. And hey, what's wrong with protective gear? I've watched a local...

    hobbyist question: hurricanes?

    Hi all,
I'm a hobbyist with a few hives with a question for commercial beekeepers: how do you manage events like hurricanes? I know I would spend time strapping down my few hives, but you guys have...

    Re: XXXL nitrile gloves?

Nice find. They are 8 mil at the fingers. They'll work great.

    Re: XXXL nitrile gloves?

I've had great success with microflex integra N864 by Ansell. I use them all the time and can't recall getting stung through them. They are actually thicker in the fingers than in the palm and cuff....

    Re: XXXL nitrile gloves?

I have no personal experience with them, but I see Black Mamba gloves advertise a 3X large 6 mil work glove. You could contact them and ask for their measurement that corresponds to their 3XL before...

    Re: XXXL nitrile gloves?

Measure the circumference of your palm, like this: https://nitrilegloves.com/glove-sizing-guide/

If you come up with a number bigger than 11, then you know you're likely out of luck for a...

    Re: Transporting Packages

Hi Champy, I only have experience with 4 packages, but each one rode in the back seat of my car just fine, no wind and no cold. Some people suggest a delicates laundry bag around the package as an...

  10. Re: Proximity to school and other safety perimeter question

I was really surprised the other weekend when I was on the Univ of MA Amherst campus and came upon two hives in a garden next to one of the dining commons. Great to see.

    Re: Wacko Texas Proposed Law

According to her posting on her Facebook page, her motivation was to "protect honeybees by providing a licensed alternative to hiring an exterminator". I don't understand how someone can be so...

    Re: Wacko Texas Proposed Law

According to her Facebook page she will "not be moving this legislation forward this session." Looks like several TX beekeeper associations explained to her how bee removal really works.

Re: Why bees build in hexagons

I sort of agree, but often it is the reporting of the mathematician's or scientist's work where the message gets jumbled. Researchers I know are keenly aware they are modeling the real world. A...

Re: Where to buy cheap sugar?

Most Walmart stores in my area have 25# bags at $8.22 each, but some are at $13.16 each. You have to check around. Last fall I stocked up with several 25 pounders from Walmart at around $7.50 each...

Not even a beekeeper, but a poet. This bit of ancient "knowledge" comes from a book by American naturalist John Burroughs (linked in the article): "Virgil says bees bear gravel stones as ballast,...

Re: which queen to use for rearing

Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice to help me be successful!

I'll very likely deploy the split strategy Nancy and squarepeg suggest on at least one (probably two) of my colonies, so...

Re: which queen to use for rearing

    Thanks all!
I realize it is a pretty open-ended question. Honestly, I also kind of forgot that I'd have some time in the spring to judge as well.
    A bit of beginner exuberance.
