    Re: Laying worker help

Put the queen in her own nuc. Once accepted, place on top of a screen bottom board atop the lw hive. After a week, most of the bees from the lw hive will have moved up peacefully to the new hive....

Re: Why am I losing my Queens?

While I agree for the most part, JWP, I think it was important when I started to do weekly inspections my first year. Sometimes it was practice for refining technique, many for learning stages of...

    Re: Bees seen collecting wax

I use a piece if plywood for a lid, they often warp, leading me to occasionally flip them. Have seen several instances this year where I'd flipped them and bees were "stealing" the wax away in the...

    Re: Cold summer

March 15-April 15 was great here, bees built up fast. Then it turned cool, with a lot of rain. Still by the end of may I was surprised at the amount of honey they'd put up. But the last 3 weeks, when...

    Re: Trumps approval of pesticides

Sure like to get my hands on some of that "native" corn that can produce 14,000 lbs of corn per acre...

Not sure what "legalization" of chems is, I assume you mean approval for a label of use in...

    Re: Maxant Industries

In all fairness, I'm sure in January, they have quite a bit of stock handy. But spring brings a lot of people who hadn't thought ahead, or procrastinating parting with cash, resulting in that stock...

Re: Quaility and Service Issues at Dadant

Pretty sure dadant in Illinois had/are having a ton of issues with flooding over the last month. Maybe still have flooding affecting them.
  8. Re: Rant: People really need to stop mowing lawns every single week.

While I agree it'd be a great thing for lawns to be less "kept", it drives me crazy that we bee keepers, as a collective, believe we should have a say in how everyone else should have to manage their...
  9. Re: What's the best way to pour the extracted honey out of my extractor with no valve

Buy a cheap 5 gallon bucket. Drill and install the honey gate. This way if the hole size is wrong, or if you find that you were too close to the bottom, you lost a cheap bucket. You can move over and...

Re: combing nuc with 8 frame hive

I do the screen combine that Steve refers to. I go ahead and let entrances face same direction. After a week, most of the bees will have already migrated to the queenrite side of the screen. Best use...

    Re: Probably over thinking this.

Biggest issue I could see from plywood, carpet, or any other ground cover is the mice that burrow under anything around here. Used to place rubber mats under a few hives and always had issues with...
  12. Re: seeking opinions about returning wet supers to hives after extracting

I guess I missed the intent of the op. Thought they were returning wet supers to the hive to catch the last of the honey flow. If I'm not gonna try to get supers refilled, I just stack them wet in...

    Re: Laying worker question

Less than 10 times. 3 or so with laying workers, and 3-4 times with hives that for whatever reason, I could not get them to take a queen with multiple tries. After as much as 6 weeks without brood,...

    Re: Laying worker question

My experience is that if you use a single screen (I use a screen bottom board), after a week half or more of the bees in the problem hive will have migrated to the queenrite colony, attracted by the...

    Re: Super Size?

Just depends on your preferences. I used a bunch of deeps for honey this year in order to have more drawn comb for splits next year.

If you want to try and separate different honeyflows, smaller...

Re: Grafting from a distant yard

    This is what I've done.
  17. Re: seeking opinions about returning wet supers to hives after extracting

Guess I'm odd here. I extract, replace on hives for a second fill, then extract again. After the second time, I just stack them in my storage shop 12 high and place a paper towel with para moth...

Re: # Days to capped brood

Any chance there was a virgin in the package? Was the cordovan queen marked? Sure it's the queen you bought?
  19. Re: seeking opinions about returning wet supers to hives after extracting

I do. Bees start working in them sooner, so it seems.

  22. Re: For the Michael Palmer cell builders, crazy scenario!

Only takes 1 piece of bur comb to open up a plastic excluder enough for queen to slip thru. This may be the one time out of a hundred it happened.

    Re: what say you?

Depending on weather, and other factors, a swam doesn't always leave when cells are capped. Maybe it was raining, or they tried and the queen hadn't slimmed down enough for flight, etc.

    Watched a...
  25. Re: Commiserate: Worst Advice You've Ever Followed, & Subsequent Disastrous Results

Definitely talking bout a different level of ventilation. That's a situation I have yet to encounter. Possibly soon enough though...I'll remember this post if I hear that bad advise.
