Sticky: Re: Riverderwent Survival Treatment Free 2017

All my current bees are from one swarm that came to my front porch last May. That was a good day.

    Re: African genetics

Some of the African genetics offer the bees advantages, so those genes will continue to spread. If we keep killing off the meaner hives we can hope that the genetics for aggression will be weeded...

Sticky: Re: Riverderwent Survival Treatment Free 2017

Well, I rather optimistically put out a swarm trap, basically an empty deep with a medium full of comb on top. Lemongrass only. The scouts are checking it out, but this early I suspect they are...

    Re: Beginner from Gerald, Missouri.

Caught a swarm right off the bat! Good work. Swarm trapping is fun.

Welcome and let us know how things are going. You'll find folks here to be pretty helpful.

Re: What to use to get the natural wood look

Look real good for outdoors a year. Nice.
I have used linseed oil and it looks pretty good, but needs to be applied every year or the wood fades. I got a random old board from the floor of my dad's...

    Re: old frames

Well, I am local but not very experienced. I'd say put them in a 5-frame nuc and feed on top. In this area it is very easy to kill off winter bees with moisture. Don't need to ask why I know this....

    Re: Northern Indiana

I expect swarms in May here in N Illinois. That tells me the bees think that's when it's time to make new queens.
  9. Re: Retiring from Beekeeping -- Used equipment for sale

To folks who might be considering driving over:
It all looked to be in good condition and the prices were certainly good.
One thing I looked at but didn't buy was a very nice observation hive.

    Re: Wax Paste For Furniture

This week I refinished a table. Final coat was 1/2 beeswax and 1/2 vegetable oil. The same stuff I use on my hands.

I did thin it with a splash of paint thinner to make it easier to spread on the...

    Re: Shelter in place...unintended consequences

Sure, Feds should have many stockpiles. But the feds are famously slow and tend to use sledgehammers when they need to drive nails. Any state or locality that doesn't plan for fast, local response is...

    Re: Shelter in place...unintended consequences

Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or not, but 4 years ago I attended a disaster prep seminar with the local police, fire, heath department and hospital personnel. We were informed by the guy...

Been trying to buy some for several years. My boss keeps vetoing the purchase as I have spent my hobby allowance already. Let us know how it goes.
  17. Re: Retiring from Beekeeping -- Used equipment for sale

I am in Byron and have interest in some of this stuff. I have the next several days off work. Let me know when is convenient for you.

    Re: Potential Swarm?

I second the advice to treat for mites on a tight schedule. Speaking from disastrous personal experience, a new beekeeper just isn't ready to try treatment free or to correctly judge mite levels...

Re: Is it time to take insulation off of my hives

Keeping mine on a while longer. Temp swings from 60 degrees to below freezing at night. I am trying only top insulation this year, and so far liking it, at least 4 of 4 are all alive.

    Re: Questions Concerning Candy

It should be hard. I had to put mine on the stove warmer area and warm it back up for several hours. Drive out some more water. You could try the oven on low heat.
