Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I donít bother with under producers any longer. It is not worth the time or effort and they rarely turn around.
I think if most would do the same, theyíd be happier beekeepers.

    Late afternoon, early evening beekeeping

With the temps in the 90ís and humidity up there as well, Iíve tried late afternoon, early evening beekeeping. Not bad at all. With the flow over, many bees are not foraging as before. So yes, a few...

Re: Generator use for Oxalic Acid

It seems multiple batteries are a good, inexpensive answer since you want to continue on with the Varrox.
Titus is correct, junk yards have very cheap batteries they pull from wrecks.

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

They should do better (smaller companies) as long as they remain healthy. Their day to day livelihood in many cases depends on goods going out the door.

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

I donít think you can look at the last 2 months and say itís indicative of the future. Any larger company has had a tremendous burden placed on them due to CV19. I know a lot of ML folks are working...

    Want to work bare handed?

Spray Deet on your hands. Works like a charm. Of course, you’re not likely to catch the queen wearing it! :)

    Re: Bottling tank cleanout?

Same here. I clean mine about once a year. Doesnít take long. This year I also replaced the seals in the valve as it was showing leakage around the top seal where the plunger descends. Took about 10...

    Re: Hive going queenless

You would have thought that the queen would have eggs/larvae before she perished...
Did she just stop laying and die days later? Seems strange.

    Hive going queenless

Ever notice that when a hive loses a queen, the bees don’t always raise a new queen...

Re: Caged queen without attendants--how long?

My guess is that the breeder will place the queens in a vented box surrounded by nurse bees.

    Re: Deck coatings

    R,
Is brushing (it’s a large deck) the only way to apply it?
Does it needs to completely dry? I’m thinking a possible rain shower while doing it.
    Thanks !

    Deck coatings

Last year I had a wooden deck built around a swimming pool. I believe Iíll need to coat it with something to make it last.
Any recommendations for a deck coating most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Re: Queen excluder material

I've only seen QE's offered to fit 8,10 hives and 5 frame nucs. Never heard of a "roll" of QE material.

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

Talked to some folks at ML. They say they are swamped with NEW beekeepers ordering supplies. Evidently, the pandemic has lured people (with time on their hands and always wanted to try) into starting...
