    Re: Beekeeping with 25 hives

The same information could be written on less than half the number of pages. The author spends way too much time "filling" pages with useless information in my opinion.

Re: Quilt boards necessary in a wet climate?

I'm north of you in Arlington.
Folks do all sorts of things with their colonies that aren't necessary but they may help to some degree. Quilt boards, screened bottoms and wrapping hives fall into...

    Re: veil mesh

Since time is money.......isn't it easier to replace it? They aren't expensive and I get about 2 seasons of near daily use out of them.

Re: Bees stilll drawing comb PNW

They'll still draw some comb but not with enough reliability for complete combs. Yesterday was the "big switch" in my area and the bees started robbing my stored equipment big time. The flow carried...

    Re: Sugar

I do for my fall feeding. Each colony gets about 4 gallons in late September. The rest of the time I feed sugar syrup.

I just bought 50 lb bags at Cash N Carry for $18 and some change. Best price...

    Re: Market for Creamed Honey?

Humor helps as well. If the man has a beard I'll call it "beard friendly" honey. :D

    Re: Farmers Market Setup

We sell at 5 farmers markets each week. The largest markets have about 80 vendors and the smaller 3 have about 30 vendors. Label your booth well with signs like "Local Raw Honey", your business name,...

    Re: Market for Creamed Honey?

We sell at 5 farmers markets a week. Creamed honey sells very well for me but the customers need a little education. About 80% of the folks coming through have never heard of it. Once they get a...
  10. Re: Tricks on using Maxant senior wax spinner.

I quit using the screen. It seemed I was always messing with keeping it in place. I now remove the basket, rinse the cappings with warm water(so they dump out easier), and dump out. Cappings are...

Re: Vails for keeps that wear glasses

Metal mesh veil is easier to see through with glasses than plastic mesh due to the much smaller size. The plastic mesh also seems to glare more which also causes visibility issues for me.

    Re: Cleaning pollen

I have one of them. It works OK. The biggest issue I've had is the pollen plugging the screen. If the moisture is high it is somewhat sticky. I have to pour the pollen in very slowly, painfully slow....

    Re: Interesting piece of equipment

Wow that is the second one of these I've seen this month! A friend of mine purchased the majority of equipment from the widow of a fellow beekeeper. He now has one of these. I've looked it over and...

    Re: Using silicone in beehive

Silicon is fine for bees once dry. I've got dozens of home built frame feeders sealed with silicon that I've been using for 5 or 6 years.

Re: Italian Fall Brood Production in the PNW

My experience is the opposite. Italians winter in much larger colonies than carnies and also starve out more frequently if not monitored in the spring.

    Re: Mouse Protection

I use 1/4" hardware cloth the width of the hive by about 1". It gets a crease lengthwise and is stuffed into the entrance with the hive tool. It's in there tight enough that it's tough to get out in...

Re: Electric Fence and dry conditions

I talked to a guy about this a couple years ago. He said an extra ground (as you've done} and water. He said to use a SEALED container like a good 5 gallon bucket with a small hole in the bottom. A...

Re: Is HFCS ok as a winter feed supplement?

Ya rbees, pretty tough bee season around here.

I've been feeding hfcs for the last 3 seasons and been very happy. The only place I've found to purchase in our area is through Mann Lake. They use a...

Re: Reasonable distance for new apiary site

I try to give my yards at least a couple miles separation and keep 20-24 per yard. My furthest yards are about 20 miles from home. I make sure to plan my trips and carry spare equipment to avoid...
  23. Re: Frame blew out during extracting - what to do with it?

They'll make drone comb in the areas they make repairs. It's up to you whether you want drone comb in your brood nest. If not you can move it to the supers. I'll place some in the brood area and some...

Re: I am calling the dearth in the Pacific NW

I'm an hour north of Seattle. Last week I thought the blackberry was done but started looking more closely and there is a second bloom coming on. I would estimate it to be about 10% of the original...

    Re: capping spinner

I would say 100 hive isn't too far off but you have to remove the cappings often. I'm running close to 300 and it is WAY to small for my operation even though I'm making it work. I was running about...
