Re: Not a good day (Im suddenly allergic)

You can also take Pepcid at the same time as Benadryl. They block different histamines and work well combined. Couldn't hurt to have in the tool box.

It's been a year since I purchased these queens. All but one made it through the cold it seems and are building up nicely. I waited around till I was too late to get any this year or I certainly...

    Re: North Carolina Honey Harvest

Pulled ours last weekend. Lots of comb drawn but only one of three supers full. The other two were mostly full but not capped. I'm not comfortable taking a lot of frames that aren't capped so I'm...

Re: Spring 2017 NC honey flow - color and source

I have had the opposite happen to me this year. I have four hives a few miles from my main yard that had very light sweet honey two years ago, absolutely nothing last year and very dark mild flavored...

    Finally getting something right

So this year we split our hives using the ramp, sheet, shake them all out method. Some use the term Taranov but about the only thing similar to his was our boards were slanted. That's it. Anyway, we...

    Carpenters Apiaries Queens

Great experience with Mr. Carpenter. He called me the week he was going to ship just to see if I was ready. I'm glad he did. We were about to go from the mid 70's to the 20's that week. So he shipped...

    Re: Swarm - Help!

You can wait if you want but sooner is better. You don't want them using up the nectar they gulped before leaving the old home. They won't get confused. I have split and put them side by side. If...

    Re: Swarm - Help!

Well, you've got the queen confined to a single deep on the left and a double deep on the right. That might have had something to do with the swarm. The water did nothing to help you. May even end up...
  11. Re: PSA: Inspect your suit! And Dadant replacement veils?

My veil would rip small holes whenever I put it in the washer. I hand wash it now. There is a window screen repair kit that has a sticky side. Cut to fit and stick it over the hole and works great.

Re: Big Losses from East Coast Cold Spell

Surprisingly came out with no loss. 75/80 degrees days for 3 weeks and then 24/30 degree nights 40 degree days for a week. Can't tell any difference in them.

    Re: extracting for neighbors

$2.00 a frame and keep the capping's and any wax. To answer the second part, no it's not worth the time.

    Re: Hive stand setup

We have individual pvc stands. Used cinderblocks but termites went up the inside and we ended up replacing several bottom boards.

Re: Any chance/ Last chance to help colonies ?

Make sure they have enough stores leave them alone and hope for the best. Do the supers have anything in them? They will cross the supers to get to the sugar for sure.

    Re: Hurricane Matthew survival

Yeah. We are in Lumberton. The hives seem to have made it ok. Two more to check in another area but will be a week before the road is pass-able. No water, no power for a week. Still no drinkable...

    Re: Hurricane Matthew survival

I still have 11 that I can't get to. The guy that lives in sight of them says they had water halfway up the bottom brood box. The roads are washed out or flooded in that area. Just want to get to...

    Re: Anyone ever go wedgeless???

You could do that, but why? Staple several bent wires or put three staples in the wedge. Either way..
For that matter why cross wire? Maybe for supers but for brood I find it unnecessary also.

Re: #6 hardware cloth or mesh source

Maybe our colonies don't know they can or don't care to, but I have 18 hives with #6 screen over oil and one or two bees get into the oil a year. Two bees a year I can live with. Have had them on...

    Re: 2016 Crop

We had an average year. 30 to 60 pounds per hive. Most have enough weight to get through till the goldenrod. SHB does seem to be much worse this year.

Re: Keeping the hobby under control

Maybe that's my problem. All 25 of my treatment-free colonies have not one flower painted on the box:lookout:. Haven't for the last eight treatment-free years. They're lucky to even get the box...
