  1. Re: looking for a well tested procedure to dry honey in the comb

Fan alone may not do the job if the relative humidity is higher. The dehumidifier keeps the humidity low but it heats up the room in the process. So basement would be my choice.

    I let the fan blow...
  2. Re: I robbed some of my bees today. I have a few questions.

It's not clear what you are saying. Are you saying the supers you took off had uncapped nectar ? If yes then I would simply put them back on the hives so they can ripe it. If you have some left over...
  3. Re: Not building on plastic frames, what to do?

You can rearrange the frames but be careful not to squish the queen in the process. Or just wait. It takes a while for the queen to acclimated. They will draw combs when they need them. Try different...

    Re: Bottling question

I bought following valve and walked over to the plumbing isle and found a PVC male-to-male coupling that would fit the thread in the brass valve. I cut off one side of male thread and kept the hex...

    Re: Bottling question

I use a lead-free brass ball valve from Lowe's on a 5 gallon bucket. Much better than honey gate. Zero spill this year with this setup vs honey gate that caused a lot of mess last year.

I keep top of the broodnest open until early reproductive swarm season is over. Until hardwood green up. After that I just make sure they have enough room and infrequent checking of broodnest.

    Re: Want More Honey

I didn't see if anyone mentioned but stronger/bigger hive produce more honey. Each colony needs a certain number of bees to upkeep the hive and it's occupants. So every extra bee over and above this...

When brood is separated from queen then they typically raise new queen. Totally normal. Lack of queen pheromone is the reason. Make use of the cells and start a new nuc.

Re: Powering a ProVap 110 in the Field

    Yes, it's a trade off.
Inverter: Easy to power with vehicle battery but limited life.
Generator: Unreliable but long running time.

You pick based on your needs. I have been stranded on the yard...

Re: Powering a ProVap 110 in the Field

    I use 2-cycle portable generator like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EFZQ53W

Be sure to run them dry before storing and use only ethanol free gas.

Re: Odd Comb on Plastic Foundation

You are supposed to have extra space near the box walls. Keep frames tightly together and center them in the middle of the box. The two last frames will be honey frames and will be drawn fat. Don't...

Re: 4 week old hive - No change in last week

Sorry to beat the dead horse but first year hive should always be fed. Period.

Drawing a foundation less frames right is a learned art. I would hang alternate medium frames in a deep brood box....
  13. Re: Startup advice - following Michael Bush's methods - Newbee

I have tried screen board and top entrance when I was new. Over time, I have moved to solid board and classic bottom entrance and top ventilation using notch, hole, or Popsicle sick. I do use...

Re: Laying Worker(s) 3 weeks after install?

By the way, there is another method to turn around LW hive. Search for it. But basically you move LW hive on top of a queen right hive separated by double #5 screen board with entrance in opposite...

Re: Laying Worker(s) 3 weeks after install?

No, you let the leftover foragers, laying or not, parish. If you believe in flying LW then I would simply drown them in soap water once I lock them up in a box at night. Heartbreaking but necessary...

Good point. I have never had problem with rough LW infecting nearby queen right hive. I have done shake out twice.

Re: Laying Worker(s) 3 weeks after install?

Easiest remedy for a LW hive is to shake all bees about 50 feet away from their original location and remove the original hive body to a different place. The foragers will join a queen right hive.

Re: Initial Medium Supers Set Up for New Nucs

Remove the bottom empty box until the top box is 80% drawn. Bees do better when they have just the right amount of room. Don't forget to keep feeding them until they draw out both boxes.

    2 medium...
  21. Re: post-swarm hive configuration is viable or untenable?

I try to give the empty box just above the brood nest with couple of brood frames moved up. You should keep the empty box if they are running out of room but you will have to bait them there to draw.

Those folks are from non-ahb territory. What you are doing is a standard practice (full suite + gloves) in our region. All our open-mated bees will have some ahb genes. I raise my own openly mated...

Re: Split Question - Not sure what happened

Couple of frames of bees may not raise the best queen so it may have been a weak queen. Walkaway split means you distribute all resources (egg, larvae, bees, food, etc.) equally between two hives.

    Re: How is this possible?

Did you check for QC after graft? If you skipped that step then you probably missed spotting virgin which are hard to find. Or virgins were out mating when you checked.
